If you are an operator in the onshore petroleum and natural gas production or gathering and boosting segment who has a lot of reciprocating compressors you may be shocked by how much the population emission factor will increase reported emissions. The methane emission factor for reciprocating compressors is increasing by 2,147%❗relative to the current emission factor. However, voluntary compressor vent monitoring is also an option (it may even be required if the compressor is an affected facility under NSPS OOOOb). For reporters in other segments who have already had to conduct compressor vent monitoring surveys, note the changes to include new mode sources: 1️⃣ Reciprocating Compressor Rod Packing - Standby mode 2️⃣ Centrifugal Compressor Dry seal leakage - Operating Mode 3️⃣ Centrifugal Compressor Wet Seal Degassing Vent - Standby Mode 4️⃣ Centrifugal Compressor Dry seal leakage - Standby Mode All this and more is broken down in detail at the link below. From Kansas Public Radio: Kansas and Missouri Becoming Home to Multiple Biogas Facilities TOPEKA, Kan. (KNS) The #renewablenaturalgas industry has surpassed 400 facilities nationwide, with more than two dozen now in #Kansas and #Missouri. Renewable natural gas repurposes methane from #sewage, #hogfarms and other sources to make fuel. Kansas and Missouri now have 25 facilities and more are planned. Shell USA plans to capture #methane from a southwest Kansas #dairy. #Springfield and #KansasCity, Missouri, want to produce renewable natural gas from #wastewater or #landfills. Proponents say this #biofuel helps the climate. Some environmental groups are skeptical. They say, for example, that switching homes from combustion to electricity is greener and better for human health. #biogas #rng #anaerobicdigestion #AD #wastetoenergy

Enforcement of fugitive methane emissions is really starting to intensify and affect operators (Example: Marathon over $240 million fine). If you are still in the "wait and see" OR "take the gamble" mindset, it's in your best interest to start at least having the conversation on how to effectively monitor your sites to avoid excessive fees and bad publicity. A consultation to find out what solutions would be a good fit for your sites is completely free, other than 30 minutes of your time and could be worth millions to your company. Whether its me or other solution providers, I strongly encourage considering continuous monitoring and the many benefits it provides.

Old Exide site added to National Priorities List BATON ROUGE – The old Exide lead smelter and refinery site in north Baton Rouge has been added to the National Priorities List (NPL), EPA announced in March 2024. The EPA temporarily took over the operation of the wastewater treatment plant on April 11, 2023. The state of Louisiana referred the site to the EPA to avoid any interruption in the continued operation of the wastewater treatment system. Notice of the listing was published in the Federal Register on March 7, 2024. “The resources necessary to continue treating the water coming from this site were more than the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) could provide,” LDEQ Secretary Aurelia S. Giacometto said. “In order to prevent any further contamination to the environment, we sought an NPL listing.” Under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (Superfund), the EPA is responsible for locating, assessing and cleaning up uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites. Within one year after a site is added to the NPL, the EPA determines whether potentially responsible parties will assess the site contamination or whether the assessment is to be conducted with federal funds. The EPA also assesses whether a quick response to prevent releases from the site is needed within three months after Listing. The Exide Baton Rouge site is a former secondary lead smelter and refinery located at 2400 Brooklawn Drive. Operations at the Exide site ceased in 2009, and demolition of all process buildings was completed in 2014. The proposed National Priorities List site covers 33 acres next to Baton Rouge Bayou. High concentrations of antimony, arsenic, lead, manganese and zinc have been found in groundwater and soils on the site, with unlined waste piles and open surface impoundments contributing to discharges of contaminated ground and surface water. An onsite system is in place to collect and treat contaminated leachate. Senators Mark Warner and Thom Tillis have introduced the #renewablenaturalgas Incentive Act, proposing a $1 per gallon tax credit for #RNG used as transportation fuel. This #bipartisanbill aims to promote #cleanerenergy, #reduceemissions, and enhance #energyindependence by incentivizing the use of RNG in various vehicles.
