⚠️ Safety Alert: The Safety Branch of the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration would like to inform workplaces about Heat Stress to ensure that their outdoor workers are protected from heat stress injuries. What is heat stress? The Nova Scotia Health and Safety Department defines heat stress as the buildup of heat in the body to the point where the body's thermostat has difficulty maintaining normal internal body temperature. Great news for the cross-provincial companies: As of May 30, 2024, an OHS allowance has been passed in Alberta to allow out-of-province first aid training equivalence as long as it meets CSA Standard Z1210-17, First aid training for the workplace - Curriculum and quality management for training agencies. AMHSA and Ember Experience's Ongoing Collaboration on the SPARK Program to Enhance Municipal Leadership and Workplace Safety The Alberta Municipal Health and Safety Association (AMHSA) and Ember are proud to re-announce their ongoing partnership with the SPARK program. Established in 2020, SPARK offers support and solutions designed to enhance leadership capabilities and promote psychological safety within Alberta’s municipal workplaces. SPARK: Elevating Municipal Leadership and Workplace Culture AMHSA, an educational not-for-profit organization committed to promoting health, safety, and environmental excellence, has partnered with Ember, a network of experts in workplace consulting and psychological safety. Together, they have developed SPARK, a comprehensive program to address the unique challenges faced by leaders in Alberta’s municipal sectors. The SPARK program is designed to empower municipal leaders by providing them with the tools, knowledge, and support needed to navigate the complexities of today’s dynamic work environments. Through a combination of insightful conversations, expert-led workshops, and ongoing support, SPARK helps leaders foster psychologically safe workplaces, enhance employee engagement, and build thriving organizational cultures. Did you know that overexertion is a leading cause of injury in Alberta’s oil and gas sector? According to Energy Safety Canada, overexertion ranks high among the top target injuries in this industry, highlighting a critical concern for workplace safety. Overexertion can occur when employees exceed their physical limits, often due to lifting, pushing, pulling, or repetitive motions, leading to strains, sprains, and other musculoskeletal injuries. As an employer you can implement best practices to keep your workers safe. Consider the following: ▶ Provide Proper Training: Educate employees on safe lifting techniques and ergonomic practices. ▶Use Mechanical Aids: Encourage the use of equipment like hoists, lifts, and carts to reduce manual lifting. ▶Rotate Tasks: Alternate between tasks to reduce prolonged exposure to repetitive motions. ▶Implement Engineering Controls: Modify workstations and processes to minimize physical strain. ▶Encourage Breaks: Schedule regular breaks to allow employees to rest and recover. ▶Promote Fitness and Wellness: Support employee fitness programs and wellness initiatives to enhance physical conditioning. ▶Maintain Clear Communication: Ensure clear communication between supervisors and workers regarding task expectations and safety protocols.
