I'm a little overdue for my weekly recognition and public appreciation of those mentors for whom I am grateful beyond words. That said, I've spent a lot of time over the last few weeks (and years), reflecting on the amazing leader and mentor Richard Denenny was to, and for me. I initially met Richard as our organization's general counsel, and - having spent a large amount of time around lawyers in a professional capacity - immediately saw that, while he was incredible in that role, he was far more. As the organization changed structure and I reported to him as our COO, I was continuously and happily surprised at the ways that he showed true leadership, by example. Among the things that I learned and continue to try to follow in his example: * Stay curious and be open to new ideas: as part of an AI/NLP startup, there was a good culture of innovation, but Richard was always truly curious and interested in possibilities, and had the best elements of a startup thinker, balanced with someone who knew that we also had a P&L to manage. * Trust your team: many of the tools in my toolkit as far as transformative change are new to many orgs, and/or have not been executed well in those orgs, leading to skepticism. Richard gave me a great amount of latitude in making substantial changes in ways that hadn't worked in the company before. They ultimately were successful, but many other leaders wouldn't have entertained approaches that were new or questionable based on prior attempts. * Give credit, take responsibility: as I write these short posts about my mentors, another pattern that's emerged for me is that the BEST leaders take accountability when there are issues, but are humble when there's success. Richard gave me more credit than I was due to some of the positive cultural and financial impacts of the changes we made, but when a given release or customer conversation didn't go quite well, there was never any blame. * Take care of your team: another pattern that is pervasive in all of my exploration and reflection on my mentors - truly care about and be part of your team. Richard was (and I'm sure still is!) one of the best listeners when working through issues with teams and team members, and was always compassionate and caring. This is a virtuous cycle - it inspired a fierce loyalty and respect that enabled the team and team members - myself most definitely included - which enabled us to build, deliver and support some big, great things. Thank you, Richard, for all of the wisdom, guidance and inspiration you've provided. It's an honor to call you mentor, Capitan.

Synchronicities are those moments when life gives you a sign that you are heading in the right direction and building the right relationships. I had one of those moments this week attending The Conference Board's Change and Transformation conference in Manhattan. Some of you will remember my ode to Alixandra M. Colehour on International Women's Day. Alix, as a trusted friend and mentor, introduced me to Stacey Young 2 months ago when I was looking for an external partner and facilitator for a critical strategy-focused leadership offsite. Stacey partnered with me to create a fabulous event and experience in early April that will have a tangible ripple effect for years in our organization. Fast forward to today and we discovered that we were at the Change and Transformation conference together and Stacey was one of the workshop presenters! I was so excited to see her and spend time together, but also proud of her and the amazing work she is doing in the change management and organizational design space. Is this a simple coincidence that she is the only person I know at this conference? I don't think so - I believe this moment is reinforcing that Stacey and I are being brought together for a higher calling. It could have been a casual friendship, but already is deeper as we discussed career and personal aspirations, what excites us, how to set boundaries to protect our time, and shared challenges and wins from our personal and professional life. Last week, my company won first place at the ProsperityNow's Rise Challenge Pitch Competition held at the Gaylord near DC. 🎉 Thank you #Accenture and #Avanade In front of some of the best minds in finance and technology, I pitched a product that combines #virtualreality (VR) and #artificialintelligence (AI) to tackle a problem bigger than technology adoption: inequality. The challenge question asked us how to overcome technology adoption barriers faced by Community Development Financial Institutions (#CDFIs) and other institutions trying to serve entrepreneurs. But here’s the truth: The real barrier isn't just about adopting new tech. It’s about the deep-rooted mistrust that exists between underrepresented entrepreneurs and financial institutions—a trust gap that fuels inequality. Let’s talk data: - According to Bankrate, 47% of Black business owners are denied loans, compared to 34% of white business owners. Even more starkly, Black entrepreneurs receive less than 1% of venture capital funding. These aren’t just statistics—they represent systemic inequalities that have kept Black and underrepresented entrepreneurs from accessing the capital they need to thrive. It’s no wonder that, for many in our communities, a shoebox, mattress, or Susu (community savings pot) feels safer than a bank. For generations, our communities have been economically disenfranchised—from redlining to the destruction of Black Wall Streets—leaving us with alternatives that feel more secure than traditional financial systems. The mistrust is historical, cultural, and deeply ingrained. That’s where emerging technologies like VR and AI come in. We’re using these tools not just to connect entrepreneurs with financial institutions but to rebuild trust. - Through VR, we create immersive environments that feel safe, familiar, and inclusive—spaces where entrepreneurs can learn, grow, and interact with financial professionals in a meaningful way. - With AI, we’re providing personalized guidance that meets entrepreneurs where they are, bridging the knowledge gap and helping them master financial literacy and management. This isn’t just a tech solution—it’s about using technology to address real-world inequalities. The concept of shared proximity is key: bringing entrepreneurs and financial institutions closer together in a space that empowers and rebuilds the trust that has been broken for so long. One of the most powerful moments of the competition was when a judge referenced my argument about trust in their feedback. It was a reminder that before we can overcome technology barriers, we must first overcome the barriers of mistrust and inequality.
