I was asked recently what is my favorite Sandler concept or technique? My response surprise the person who asked. Transactional Analysis. Transactional Analysis (TA) is the foundation on which the Sandler methodology was built. Understanding the psychology of what's happening underneath the sale between the buyer and seller. TA tells us that people have three different ego states at all times: Their Parent ego state (P), which shows up in two sub ego states--critical parent and nurturing parent; the Adult (A) ego state; and the Child (C) ego state, which shows up as natural child, adaptive child or rebellious child. Our adult ego state processes data and facts, without emotion. Our child ego states process emotion, of which one of those emotions shows up as a desire for instant gratification. When we understand this in the context of a sales meeting, we all agree already that people make decisions emotionally and justify them logically. Understanding that, we can then use our questioning techniques to uncover the buying pains and impacts that would cause a buyer to want to do something different tomorrow than they are doing today...but then use our questioning techniques to also help them rationalize their decision logically. In TA terms, the Child ego state wants instant gratification and decides they want your solution to their problem. Their Adult ego state gives themselves permission to buy. There is no convincing on behalf of the sales person that takes place. When you understand TA, along with the correct techniques, you are able to lead the buyer to self discover that they want what you have. Our role is not to manipulate the outcome. The buyer gets to own the yes or the no at every stage of the process if they want to move to the next stage of the process. Our role is merely to facilitate the process. Trying to convince buyers comes across as pushy and ineffective. When they have the space to self discover that they want what we have, beautiful things happen. This means we have to emotionally detach from the outcome and stay out of our own child ego stages. (We have a joke at Sandler: Leave your child [ego state] in the car...with the windows cracked, of course.) :-) As the seller, our role is to stay mostly in the Nurturing Parent and Adult ego states--easier said than done, particularly when we find ourselves in positions of wanting to educate, justify or defend (child ego states). Meet Christie the Concept Coach, an AI-powered coach that SoundStrategies developed for the BizStarts Racine program. Christie’s unique—she’s “from” Racine, WI, a “graduate” of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and designed to connect personally with entrepreneurs in the program. She’s an expert in business concept development but also knows Racine’s and the greater Milwaukee area's best spots to eat and visit, making learning more personal and engaging. Lately, I find myself using the AI coaches and tools we build for our programs more and more in my own work. In fact, Christie recently helped me refine the concept statement for an upcoming bootcamp we’re launching. Then give them a compelling reason to. One of the best ways to do that is to show them how their investment will provide them with a significant return. Demonstrating value and ROI in your proposal is critical. A few years ago, I was working with a consultant in our Clarity Coaching Program. She was going to submit a proposal to a client for $60k and felt confident she’d win the business. She asked for my feedback. After reviewing her situation I uncovered that she was creating significantly more value than she thought. She could raise her fee from $60k to $200k and still give her client an extraordinary return. So, she upped her price for this proposal without changing any of the deliverables... ...and won the engagement at this much higher fee. The lesson? The ROI you provide should be so great that your buyer has no qualms over your fee. So get clear on that ROI and make it evident in your consulting proposals.
