Urgent call for accountants in public sector AICPA and the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers, (NASACT) have released a report highlighting a critical shortage of accountants in state and local governments. AICPA chief executive of public accounting Susan Coffey stated: "We have a talent shortage in accounting that affects business as a whole." The report suggests remedies such as competitive salaries for CPAs, educating legislative bodies on the value of accountants, and reviewing audit thresholds. It emphasizes the need for specialized expertise in public sector accounting, as government salaries often lag behind the private sector. The report also calls for increased educational initiatives and support for internships to attract young talent into the profession. R. Kinney Poynter, CPA, NASACT executive director, urged for renewed investment in public-sector accounting, stating: "Trust in government requires governments to prepare clear, consistent financial data." The report advocates for aligning accounting standards and reviewing audit requirements to enhance accountability.
