Harnessing every opportunity in your career is not Selfishness Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work across various specialty areas including nursing homes, emergency departments, stroke wards, acute hospital care, nursing management, patient flow units, community health, and with vulnerable healthcare populations. I have also embraced digital technology, integrating it into my personal and professional life, underscoring that nursing extends far beyond the bedside. In my first book “Emerge as an HealthPro”, I dedicated a chapter to exploring 30 entrepreneurship opportunities for nurses. This isn't about moving away from bedside care, but rather recognizing the myriad of possibilities beyond hospital walls. Nursing is global, diverse, and offers a wide range of career paths where one can still practice the core values of care, compassion, and skill. Guess what, my colleague and co-mentor, Ibilola Okunola, released a book titled "NEW ROLES FOR NORSES 100 Non-Clinical Jobs to Grow and Earn More. The most effective way to lead through others is through inspiration. Inspiring others is the ability to encourage others to achieve agreed-on and predetermined goals. Plenty of behaviors are known to solicit inspiration. I propose a simple list of behaviors that promote inspiration, such as showing Appreciation, fostering a sense of Belonging, and demonstrating Curiosity and Compassion: the ABCs of leadership. Does anyone else remember life before and after Oct. 1, 2007? Before MS-DRGs … and before ACDIS? This was an important time in my life, and we talk about it and much more of my origin story on episode 49 of Off the Record with Robert Oubre, MD (The Doctor of Documentation) and Jason Jobes, recorded live in Pierre Part, Louisiana. Part 2 of the interview is also available. On that episode we cover Jason and Dr. Oubre’s successes and growing pains as they work to grow new business in healthcare. Links to both shows below. If there’s a takeaway from this video it’s that success has a component of luck. Launching ACDIS on the same day MS-DRGs took effect was a stroke of good fortune, and purely accidental. But the other takeaway is that you must be willing to take the leap in the first place, and follow through. Sometimes (perhaps most of the time) you will meet with failure, but it just takes one bold venture to land—and you’re off to the races. *** What did you think of this two-part detour into the bayou? We strayed a little bit further “off the record” than is typical for the show. I’m due to come back to some more traditional CDI and coding related guests and topics, but I always love hearing your feedback.

Had the opportunity to attend the 16th annual Merchant Medicine Symposium in Nashville, and I have to say—it was an incredible experience! The speakers were nothing short of inspiring, sharing cutting-edge insights that really show how urgent care is evolving. From discussions about innovation to ways we can better serve our communities, it’s clear that the future of urgent care is brighter than ever. There was a wealth of knowledge on how we can continue to expand our reach, increase access to care, and build a more patient-centered experience. ✳ Tell me one thing that you're proud of with one of your residents ✳ When I was a nursing home administrator, I always started our all-staff meetings the same way: by asking everyone to share one resident they were proud of or a story of something great that had happened with a resident since our last meeting. We all know that long-term care presents many challenges, and it is easy to get caught up in the stress and criticism. However, the times when it's the most difficult are also the times when it's most important to reminisce on the good. Reminisce on the positive effect you're having on someone's life, someone who truly needs your help. In an industry where recognition can be scarce, celebrating these small wins is essential for maintaining morale and reinforcing the value of your efforts. So, remember to take a minute today to think about some of the great things your facility is doing. And if no one has told you lately, you're doing a great job. "Everyone keeps asking me if I am a nurse!" A young employee who started on my team a few months ago said as she was explaining to friends and family what her new job was. She explained while going through school and life, she never knew that "Revenue Cycle" was a thing.  I quipped back...."Revenue Cycle is the reason we have ER's to go to when we have emergencies and why we have doctors to help us."  I went on to explain that our providers, like nurses and doctors are sooo important but they have alot on their minds keeping their patients alive and healthy. Its our job to make sure they get paid by insurance companies, patients, third parties amd everyone else....to keep doing what they are doing.  See Revenue Cycle makes sure there is money to pay the power bill, and money for supplies and imaging equipment to take the X-Rays.  We are all a necessary part of healthcare in the United States. That without a good Revenue cycle dept, hospitals run the risk of closing. And then where would you go when you had a heart attack? Where would you go to have a baby? Now its so much more complicated. I said, "Do you know what the managed care dept does? They make sure we have insurance companies to bill. They make sure we get the best rates possible. They make sure the reimbursement we get...is enough to cover the costs. Or what about the procurement dept? They make sure the money revenue cycle brings in is spent as wisely as possible. Think of them as the mom at grocery store with her coupons and sale papers.  They make sure we have the things we need to provide the services, at the best price.  It takes an army to run healthcare. Proud to see how CVS Health is answering that call. 👇 In a first-of-its-kind initiative, CVS Health announced an environmental health impact program to help people most vulnerable to extreme weather events — like #HeatWaves — that can worsen existing chronic conditions. Initially available to our Aetna members with a goal to expand, this initiative will use advanced environmental data analytics and enable our care managers to contact vulnerable patients with tailored recommendations. Heat-related illnesses are preventable with outreach and intervention. Our initiative aims to provide up to a seven days' warning in advance of an extreme weather event, giving our members critical time to prepare.
