The career path for a social media manager is kinda... scary: Step 1: work in a totally unrelated field Step 2: someone ask you to post on their Facebook page Step 3: you realize it's kinda fun and you take it more seriously *fast fwd through a few courses Step 4: run social media for a small brand Step 5: run social media for the big boys Step 6: then you join an agency Step 7: but that becomes mundane so you start to freelance Step 8: wait, now you're just burntout Step 9: repeat steps 4 to 8 all while you're still under 30 years old

My advice for anyone considering a career in social media 1) You’re rarely fully 'off the clock,' especially as a social media manager. Social never stops. 2) Expect criticism. Creative work is subjective, and not everyone will love what you produce. 3) Be ready to pivot quickly—new trends, platforms, and workflows pop up constantly. 4) There's no sure way to predict the success of a campaign or video. Don’t expect to go viral immediately, and don’t let it discourage you when it doesn't. 5) Consistency is key. Building an online presence takes time, so keep showing up! 🙌😊 #socialmediatips #socialmedia

Social Media Manager is not an entry-level position. It's not something you can just put an intern in charge of. It doesn't fall under "other duties as assigned." So, why in 2024 are people still listing social media manager as an entry-level position? A Day in the Life of a Social Media Manager🎪 Being a social media manager is basically a daily juggling act—5 tabs open, 10 posts scheduled, and 20 notifications piling up… all while pretending I’m totally calm! 😅 Here’s a peek into the chaos: 1. Managing five accounts? Easy. Accidentally posting my grocery list on the company’s story? Well, that happened too. Multitasking at its finest! 🛒📲 2. My favorite skill: writing the perfect post while dodging a crisis, sipping coffee, and trying to remember to breathe. Just another day! ☕💻 3. Trying to explain to non-marketing friends why your phone never stops buzzing, and why ‘one more edit’ is never really the last one. 📱😅 4. Some of ya'll are writing social content, like you're writing a high school essay: - Intro (Hook, Thesis, Transition) - Body Paragraph 1 (strongest point) - Body Paragraph 2 (weakest point) - Body Paragraph 3 (second-strongest point) - Conclusion (restate thesis, summarize, conclude) Or maybe, the journalistic technique with a lil' inverted triangle: - Lede (hook; answer the 5 W's) - Nut Graf (important details and context) - Tail (extra info) But neither of these are impactful in creating content that actually builds a tribe around your brand. ➡ If I were to teach a standard format for a social post it would be: - Hook (make a promise & then deliver) - Tell a story (hero, villain, purpose) spoiler alert: the reader is always the hero - Call to Connection (invite your audience to engage & interact in a way that builds a relationship and is a value exchange) I want you to forget quite literally everything you learned about how to write. Especially those lengthy paragraphs (break them up), five dollar words, and a few grammatical rules, in favour of readability and connection. English Majors don't come at me. (Don't forget to save this for your next piece of content)

The *very* first thing you need to do when you get hired as a social media manager is sit down with your supervisor and get access to those social media accounts. Like, stat. Why? → Because otherwise you'll miss your window and your supervisor won't be available for days. → Because otherwise you won't be able to see what you're working with behind the curtain. → Because you won't be able to do your job. Trust me, I've made this mistake several times. 🙃 So, right after you get hired, schedule a 15 - 30 minute video call with your manager or whoever has access to the social media accounts. Dear hiring managers, Stop asking social media strategists and content creators to complete projects as part of the interview process. We have portfolios for a reason. It’s unacceptable for hiring managers to request "deliverables" for free, only to ghost candidates or not hire them after. Review the portfolio—that's it, that's the post. #socialmediastrategy #jobseeker #unemployed

Stop requiring candidates for social media manager roles to have experience in whatever specific social media management tool your brand happens to be using. There's a lot of tools out there and most social media professionals have used several. But if they haven't used the particular one your brand uses...THEY CAN LEARN IT QUICKLY. It's like driving a car. If you get into a car you've never driven before, you can still drive it--it just might take you a few minutes to figure out how to turn the windshield wipers on. Social media professionals are smart people...they'll figure it out.

Oh, I just had to reshare this one. We're not filling intern or entry-level positions. We're a diverse, ever-evolving group of professionals from various backgrounds and degrees. We wear many hats, bridge gaps between disciplines, and bring a love of good storytelling to the digital sphere along with us. We optimize, research, plan, and pivot with the newest trends, features and algorithm changes the social media gods decide to throw at us next. We come from different educational backgrounds and adapt to new processes and ways of thinking: If we're not analytical, we learn to be. If we're not creative, we learn to be. If we're not writers, we learn to be. And when we're not posting for your brand, we're planning, reporting, creating or collaborating on assets that tells your brand story. Not every client or company sees the heavy lifting or gets to peak behind the curtain, but when you get the right professionals behind your brand, you'll see the results. And even if it's not set to private and they are an influencer or content creator, just know that they are not being as consistent as they want to be because their clients will always come first and even if they try to see themselves as a client, it just doesn't happen. "How little I post has nothing to do with how well I can do my job" cannot be screamed louder for people to understand.
