I will never grow tired of expressing the importance of giving yourself permission to Just Start & Get Visible. I’m officially wrapping up a week of a media blitz talking all about etiquette and leadership on behalf of Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars and the important work that they do! All of this is possible purely from making one decision to START a business called Scarlet that had an origin focus of teaching etiquette to teen girls in the city of Detroit. Now, more than a decade later with partnerships across multiple industries and a refined focus of helping leaders become better leaders, I’m reminded of what’s possible when you stop waiting and wishing and start taking action! So, here I am again - reminding you to Just Start the things you want to do. … and to be clear… I’m talking to you if you are a corporate employee and you want to start getting more invisible at your job so you can take advantage of career elevation opportunities. I’m talking to you if you have entrepreneurial interest and you wanna explore starting a venture. I’m talking to you if you know you have expertise to share, but you’re hiding… It doesn’t matter if you’re 17 or 77. If you’re looking for a sign or the perfect time to get started, this is it! I read the comment section of this article on the WishTV FB page, and there is a perspective missing that I didn’t see. I was invited to sign up for this when it first launched and I declined. Many of these programs for Black or minority people aren’t nuanced enough for the range of businesses and skills entrepreneurs already have. This gap is not exclusive to this program. There have been other programs as well that have reached out. The “benefits” aren’t useful to me. The trade off paying some participation fee or completing mandatory classes doesn’t appeal to when the classes include information I don’t need or already know. When I look at some of the offerings from some of these minority based programs, they are basic 101 stuff. Yes, that is needed for some folks. What about everyone else? Other people aren’t looking for that. I don’t need a program to tell me how to register my business name with the state or how to do my taxes. Some of these programs lack the differentiation to appeal to the target group they are targeting. Last, do these programs even consult the target audience before offering stuff that entrepreneurs “need” ? Every day, it seems like a new program is popping up to help Black folks but it remains to be clear what the benefit is outside of selective stats that just tells you how many participants the program has. How much renevue did these entrepreneurs gain? How many grants (not loans) did they secure? How much did their clientele increase?

CALLING ALL AFRICAN AMERICAN VETERANS, The Grand Rapids African American Health Institute,  NAACP, and Heroes/Sheroes Corner have joined forces to lead an initiative called “I Belong Strong” for Black Veterans.  This initiative aims to build awareness about the challenges African American Veterans experience and provide services and resources to support their needs.  We believe that the voices of the communities we advocate for and serve should always be included in the vision and decision-making process of everything we do. As a black veteran who cares about the well-being of others, you are highly recommended to be an ambassador for this important cause.  Your primary role as an African American Veteran Ambassador (BVA) would be to reach out to other African American Veterans within your families, networks, and communities and invite them to participate in this program,  designed specifically for them.  We will provide individual and group support; and offer two roundtables per year and one community breakfast forum per year to bring greater awareness about the challenges, obstacles, and disparities African American Veterans experience.  The overarching goal is to implement solutions to African American Veteran issues and ensure they receive the respect, services, resources, and dignity they deserve. My name is Dr. Patrick D. Coleman, a 15-year U. S. Army Veteran and  I am an Outreach Coordinator with the Grand Rapids African American Health Institute, (GRAAHI) in partnership with the NAACP of West Michigan and Hero’s/Sheroes Corner Grand Rapids. After serving our country, African American Veterans, who vowed to give their lives to keep our country free are living with pain both physically and mentally. This is why we need to hear from you. As some of you may be aware every 22 seconds a Veteran dies by suicide. We are looking for our fellow African American Veterans to share information and resources with, to ensure you get the help you need. Our goal is to bring awareness to our African American Veterans in West Michigan in the area of mental health and the resources they may be missing out on. We want to make the veteran aware of the following: Increase awareness of resources, health benefits, and services available to African American Veterans. Become an advocate for resources and services to meet the needs expressed by African American Veterans and develop a greater understanding of the needs and gaps of our African American Veterans. We want to challenge systems to hire more African American Veterans and support this initiative. Finally, we would like to do more for our African American Veterans in West Michigan to level the playing field starting with services and creating a round table where you can share your past and current experiences. From the round table, we are developing an opportunity to bring in more players from the healthcare community to hear from you and be ready to act on your concerns.

📈The State of Black Men Panel Discussion Milwaukee 👑 FATHERHOOD SUMMIT - <Why This Is Important> Reclaiming narratives and challenging stereotypes is crucial for us as Black men because it directly impacts how we see ourselves, how we are seen by others, and how future generations are shaped. Black men, when we are committed to positive change, we help challenge the social stratification that has long marginalized our communities. Social stratification creates rigid hierarchies that often limit access to resources, opportunities, and social mobility for us. By engaging in activities that promote education, economic empowerment, and social justice, we disrupt these hierarchies. For instance, mentoring young men, advocating for equitable policies, and building businesses that serve our communities are all ways we can break down barriers. These actions not only provide immediate benefits but also set the stage for long-term systemic change, challenging the structures that have historically kept us at a disadvantage. Moreover, our commitment to positive change redefines societal perceptions and narratives about Black men. By excelling in various fields, participating in civic activities, and leading social justice initiatives, we challenge the stereotypes and biases that contribute to social stratification. Visible success and meaningful contributions create powerful counter-narratives that inspire others within our community to pursue their goals and believe in their potential. Black men, it’s essential that we aim higher than merely securing a single seat at the table. Representation is crucial, but true progress means seeing multiple voices of our community in these spaces, sharing diverse perspectives, and collectively impacting decisions. When only one of us is present, the full spectrum of our stories, talents, and insights is often lost. That’s why we can’t let “just one” be enough. Our goal should be creating environments where the presence of Black men is natural, frequent, and valued for the richness it brings. This requires us to see beyond individual success and to set a standard that invites others into spaces where historically we have been underrepresented. Besides, achieving this means we must be ready to challenge the status quo in meaningful ways. It means standing firm on values like integrity, respect, and unity, even when it feels uncomfortable or when it could risk our own position. We lead by example not only by excelling but by making it easier for others to enter these spaces, too. By fostering collaboration over competition, showing courage over conformity, we signal to the next generation that they, too, belong in the room—not as a token, but as changemakers. The more we uphold these values and bring others along, the closer we get to breaking down barriers and transforming spaces into true reflections of the communities they serve. Thoughtful article by Chicago's Alderman Desmon Yancy a few days ago articulating the growing frustration of Black Chicago residents. This sentiment is also reflected nationwide as Black America is trying to grapple with the challenges that are plaguing our communities. With public safety, health, and housing challenges, our communities are seemingly confused with how resources are allocated and not feeling relevant only during election years. It is hard to believe that in 2024, Black Chicago is facing enormous challenges with food and healthcare deserts, chronic affordable housing shortages, and public health issues where your zip code determines your life expectancy. This is why I advocate for Black political leaders to develop a "Go To 2020 for Black Chicago". We know all of this cannot rest on a new Mayor and fresh City Council. However, I believe making strategic investments in addressing these chronic issues with visible and tangible projects and resources that Black Chicago will immediately feel and recognize. These immediate and consistent investments in housing, reversing the blight on commercial corridors, and reducing food and pharmacy deserts will give the results and impact that Black Chicago residents will support.

Project 2025 impacts YOU! We chose some critical areas for focus: ~Education-Dr. Kareem Moncree Moffett Phd ~Healthcare -Dr. Yvette Casey Hunter and Dr. Karen Bankston ~Housing- Sheila Holmes Howard ~Justice-Attorney Fanon Rucker and Judge Janaya Trotter Bratton ~Workforce/Family- Y. Laketa Cole ~DEI - Minority Business Impact locally and nationally- Robert Bell and Clifford Bailey Former Mayor Dwight Tillery will also speak about the concerns pertaining to Voter Registration and Suppression and we will have an active Voter Registration desk powered by the Coalition for a Just Hamilton County. We will allow 20 minutes for each area and would like for you to cover a few key points of concern and discuss the impact. We will distribute index cards to the audience for questions to be submitted and we will allow 30-40 minutes for Q&A at the end of the session. This will be moderated by Dr. Pamela Viscione Matthews and me. We know that we could spend a week discussing Project 2025, but we are primarily trying to make sure that people understand the wide scope of the impact of these policies. We want to make sure we have time for questions so we can address any concerns. We are also planning a second session on October 19 during the actual voting month to provide those who wait to vote, an opportunity to find out some information.
