🖤 💚 💜 ❤️ 💙 💛 I usually don't post about anything political on LinkedIn but for me this is less about "politics" and more about why you often will see me post about the importance of my Squad and Sisterhood. And how quite frankly, without it, I would not be able to make it through this thing we call work-life. Vice President Kamala Harris gave a moving and needed speech yesterday at the Boule (conference) of my beloved Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. - Official. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Madame VP Harris, she showed up as originally planned despite what I can only imagine has been a hectic schedule since her candidacy was announced. She, as all members of the Divine Nine organizations - the (9) historically Black Greek letter organizations say, "We understood the assignment." Let me be clear, we all do because we learned to! We needed to because we had no choice. In other words, we show up. We speak up. We support one another regardless of in the same organization or not. We want each other to win because it is a win for all of us. You don't have to be a D9 member to understand that or to practice it. You just have to understand that your privilege (if you have it) should be used for good meaning not everyone need look like you or act like you to "fit in." You have to be open to share what you have learned by being a mentor. You have to be a champion and voice for others that do not have one. Speak up about people in the rooms that they have no access to; at least, not yet. I am fortunate to have much of my network show up and speak up for me. You know who you are! But more people need to step up for others. It's not that hard. Come on, folks! Let's use this current climate as an example of how more than ever we need to bring others up and along. UNCF, the United Negro College Fund, known as the United Fund, is a philanthropic organization that funds scholarships for Black students and general scholarship funds for 37 private HBCUs. UNCF was incorporated on April 25, 1944, by Frederick D. Patterson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and others. UNCF is headquartered in DC. In 2005, UNCF supported approximately 65,000 students at over 900 colleges and universities with approximately $113 million in grants and scholarships. About 60% of these students are the first in their families to attend college, and 62% have annual family incomes of less than $25,000. UNCF administers over 450 named scholarships. UNCF’s president and chief executive officer is Michael Lomax. Past presidents of the UNCF included William H. Gray and Vernon Jordan. Though founded to address funding inequities in education resources for African Americans, UNCF-administered scholarships are open to all ethnicities; the great majority of recipients are still African-American. It provides scholarships to students attending its member colleges as well as to those going elsewhere. Graduates of UNCF member institutions and scholarships have included many Black people in the fields of business, politics, health care, and the arts. Some prominent UNCF alumni include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; Alexis Herman; Spike Lee; Samuel L. Jackson; General Chappie James; and Dr. David Satcher. UNCF adopted as its motto the maxim “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” This maxim has become one of the most widely recognized slogans in advertising history. The motto was notably mangled in an address to the organization by VPOTUS Dan Quayle, who stated: “And you take the UNCF model that what a waste it is to lose one’s mind or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is.” The motto, which has been used in numerous award-winning UNCF ad campaigns, was created by Forest Long, of the advertising agency Young & Rubicam, in partnership with the Ad Council. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

The National Black Independent Political Party was formed in November 1980 as a response to the growing concerns of the African American community and their place in the political ecosystem. The NBIPP remains the most prominent example of African Americans breaking with the major two-party system of Democrats and Republicans. The NBIPP was formed on the heels of a three-day convention held in Philadelphia at Benjamin Franklin High School between November 21-23, 1990. Over 1,500 delegates consisted of leaders from the Black Power Movement and other related progressive groups gathered to form the party. The gathering was held just after the 150th anniversary of the first Black political convention of September 1830 in Philadelphia. Keeping true to its overall mission, the national charter expressed its concerns and aims pointedly. “The National Black Independent Political Party aims to attain power to radically transform the present socio-economic order. That is, to achieve self-determination and social and political freedom for the masses of Black people. Therefore, our party will actively oppose racism, imperialism, sexual oppression, and capitalist exploitation,” the charter stated. Much of the NBIPP’s language was taken from the same concepts enacted by the Black Power Movement and Pan-Africanist leaders. The group has been studied as an example of how the fight for equal rights among Blacks has evolved over the decades. The NBIPP disbanded after just six years with little in the way of explanation. Although several books have since been written about the rise and fall of the NBIPP, few outside documents point to the machinations behind the party’s end. In the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris's ascension as the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party, the Howard University Initiative on Public Opinion conducted a poll on the opinions of Black voters July 22-24 in relation to Harris's candidacy. The report includes results from more than 2000 respondents from more than 30 states, weighted by gender and education level. Results suggest that Harris is best known for her advocacy for reproductive rights, that her best path to victory is to select a white male running mate, and that respondents view her as a politically moderate Democrat. The events that comprise MED Week are meant to raise awareness among minority business owners, and the larger business community and support these businesses in their efforts to grow to scale. All are welcome! The recognition and support provided by events like MED Week are essential to bolstering the growth and sustainability of small and medium sized businesses.
