Using AI to prevent suicide (corrections and other institutions) In addition to preventing suicides, the system will also prevent conflicts between prisoners and fires. AI is actively used to ensure security and improve conditions for prisoners. AI analyzes the behavior of people in the cameras and immediately notifies staff if suspicious actions are detected. This allows employees to quickly respond to possible threats and take measures to prevent incidents.

Embracing validated risk equations revolutionizes CKD management, prioritizing personalized care (Recommendation 2.2.1). While CKD staging heatmaps offer population-level risks, absolute risk estimation empowers tailored interventions based on individual characteristics. Models like KFRE, Veterans Affairs, and Z6 Score provide accurate predictions using routine data. Predicting kidney failure aids in optimizing healthcare, identifying therapy candidates, and enabling informed discussions. Integrating risk models into practice streamlines decision-making, especially in low-resource settings. Specialized calculators offer pediatric insights, while considering sex assigned at birth, hormone milieu, and gender identity enhances informed decisions. Prioritizing validated equations globally ensures equitable and personalized care, enhancing outcomes. Empowering providers with accurate risk estimations enables proactive management and patient-centered approaches. Military caution in the face of Generative AI Branches of the U.S. military are slowing the adoption of generative AI, highlighting the challenges of integrating it responsibly. According to Jacquelyn Schneider of the Hoover Institution, the linguistic models tested often suggested escalation to the use of nuclear weapons in war simulations. Earlier forms of AI are already used to analyze supply chains and satellite data. However, generative AI presents security vulnerabilities that make it unsuitable for operational use cases, as recently highlighted by the U.S. Marine recently. Caution therefore remains necessary, particularly with the issues associated with data ownership and the complexity of military decisions based on AI.

#Colorado Leads the Charge in #Neurodata #Privacy The Colorado General Assembly has approved an amendment to the Colorado Privacy Act, extending protections to sensitive biometric and "neural data." This is a significant step in safeguarding consumer privacy in the emerging field of #neurotechnology. Neurotechnology devices like #EEGheadbands and #brainimplants collect data from electrical nerve impulses and brain waves. This information, known as neurodata, is unique, potentially identifiable, and could provide insights into a person's memories, biases, and intentions. While neurotechnology holds immense potential for medical advancements and human-computer interaction, it's crucial to establish safeguards against its misuse. Colorado's amendment is a pioneering effort in this direction, setting a precedent for other states to follow. #neurotechnology #privacy #ColoradoPrivacyAct #dataprivacy #technology #bettertomorrow

If it becomes law, Colorado's "Consumer Protections for Artificial Intelligence" ("CPAI," SB24-205) seems to be doing a wink-wink-nudge-nudge at the NIST AI Risk Management Framework (RMF). Now, CPAI doesn't come out and say it, but in reading between the lines my read is that it is telling developers and deployers/end-users: "Follow the RMF. If you do, you may be able to use it as an affirmative defense." (To find this language, scroll to the bottom of the bill.) Let's take this a step further. The RMF places a significant amount of emphasis on governance; in fact, it is the single most important life cycle principle in the RMF. How much so, take a look at this post https://lnkd.in/gkUsVauV (For more on life cycle principles, check out https://lnkd.in/gRkxpDPk). And this is where I can see developers and deployers failing to realize the benefits of the affirmative defense because they fail to have in place solid 4Ps of governance (policies, processes, procedures, and practices) that the RMF requires. https://lnkd.in/gg_jKieT #aigovernance

The recent release (August 14, 2024) of the Congressional Research Service report, "Oversight of Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity: Current Policies and Options for Congress" (https://lnkd.in/eY4z3U-v), highlights concerns that #artificialintelligence (AI) could be repurposed or misused in biological design, raising significant biosafety and biosecurity issues. Similarly, RAND has discussed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security proposed collaborative, whole-of-government strategy for developing and adopting AI initiatives, as outlined in their "2024 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Roadmap" (https://lnkd.in/eJQs9Xe2). Both CRS and RAND emphasize that the rapid pace of AI development and integration is fueling growing concerns around "cultural, ethical, and privacy issues." 📢 While the potential of AI #technology is vast, there’s a critical need to understand the 2nd and 3rd order impacts through modeling & simulation (M&S), and rigorous testing. By embracing AI responsibly, DHS and other federal organizations can not only drive innovation but also address the social concerns that these transformative technologies may bring like United States Department of Defense investing in data and AI structure outlined in their "DOD #Innovation Fact Sheet" ( https://lnkd.in/eJC7FtMq )

🔍 The Double-Edged Sword of Intelligence: Navigating Double Agents and Disinformation 🔍 As a former intelligence officer, I understand the critical importance of source validation in safeguarding against infiltration and disinformation. The recent revelation by the F.B.I. regarding the severing of ties with informants linked to Russian disinformation underscores the perpetual challenge faced by intelligence and law enforcement agencies worldwide. 🕵️♂️ The F.B.I.'s internal review, conducted in 2020 and 2021, led to cutting ties with several informants and issuing warnings about dozens of others. This decision was made in response to concerns that these informants, some of whom had provided information about Russia-aligned oligarchs, political leaders, and other influential figures, were linked to Russian disinformation. This review came at a crucial time, during and after the 2020 election, amid heightened fears of Russian meddling and the looming threat of Russia's potential invasion of Ukraine. See the New York Times article here: https://lnkd.in/eGK_-Khb 🔍 Double agents, and dangles represent a persistent validation issue, posing a significant threat to the integrity of intelligence operations. Whether longstanding or newly recruited, any source could potentially be a plant by another intelligence agency or a hostile group. These individuals are strategically deployed by foreign intelligence organizations to disrupt and damage the reputation of the agencies they infiltrate. ⚖️ In navigating this complex landscape, agencies must remain ever-cognizant of the risks posed by double agents and dangles, continuously refining their vetting processes and adapting their counterintelligence strategies. The F.B.I.'s actions highlight the delicate balance between leveraging valuable human intelligence and mitigating the risks of disinformation, particularly in regions like post-Soviet countries where alliances are fluid and opaque. As we confront evolving threats in an increasingly interconnected world, vigilance and diligence are paramount in preserving the integrity and effectiveness of our intelligence services. "We urge caution when enhancing video, since increasing only the brightness in videos captured at night may misrepresent the visibility of items at the time of recording.": a sentence in the interesting article https://lnkd.in/dRy78z54 by Dave Blake, PhD, CFVT and Robert McFarlane links very well with something I've been thinking about a lot lately: the difference in working with videos coming from CCTV and body-worn cameras (BWC). Most of the time, we use CCTV to identify a subject or understand the dynamics of an event when no human witness is available, so enhancement plays a key factor. On the other hand, having a BWC video means that an officer was there. We likely already know a lot and identify the subject most of the time. BWC videos are very often used to better understand the behavior of both the filmed subjects and the officers wearing the cameras. Blake and McFarlane's sentence underlines the importance of understanding the final purpose of video analysis (and eventual enhancement). If we want to identify a person, we definitely need to boost the brightness, but if we want to understand whether a person in a dark alley could have been seen by the officer wearing the BWC or not, then we may need to avoid it. I want to add a remark, though: the way our visual system (= eye + brain) and a camera perceive the light is completely different. Hence, I am not sure even the dark BWC video can faithfully represent what the officer saw. And very likely, the BWC had a wide-angle lens, making straight objects appear curved. It's important for the analysis to have the right preparation and sensibility to evaluate the impact of this issue. In the end, as said many times, the final purpose of forensic video enhancement is not to give us a nice picture but a more accurate representation of the captured scene. Thanks to the authors of the article for highlighting again the importance of correctly acquiring, processing, and analyzing video evidence! Together, article after article, we can improve the security and justice of our society. 💪
