As CCL Hospitality Group , Unidine and Compass Group USA continues to celebrate and spotlight our team members for #NationalHispanicHeritageMonth ~ we are spotlighting Daniel Cartagena our Director of Hospitality at our Premier location Moorings Park Communities in Naples Florida. Dan is a proud Puerto Rican. when I asked him about traditions that are important to him, this is what he shared. "My favorite time of year is almost here—Christmas! It’s a great season filled with family, laughter, and our beloved traditions. One of the highlights for us is participating in a “parranda,” a Puerto Rican celebration that brings everyone together. Imagine this: groups of friends and family gathered to spread joy and music, reminiscent of Christmas caroling, but with a unique twist. Parrandas are vibrant social events featuring lively traditional Puerto Rican music, delicious food, and festive drinks such as coquito. We often venture out in the evening, singing and dancing through the streets, sometimes until the early hours of the morning. It’s a celebration that makes you feel alive! But the fun doesn’t end on Christmas Day. We keep the festivities going all the way to Three Kings Day on January 6th. On this special night, children place a shoebox filled with grass and water under their beds for the camels of the Three Wise Men. Just like on Christmas, the excitement builds as the Kings leave behind surprises and gifts, adding an extra sprinkle of magic to the holiday season. For me, Christmas is more than just a day; it’s a joyful celebration that stretches across weeks, filled with music, love, and cherished memories with family and friends." Dan is a go to, mentor, teacher, Gantt chart extraordinaire and cheer leaders for so many. People are his passion. I asked him how we can assure our diverse team members are represented and celebrated. he shared "As we get to know our partners, it is important that we create opportunities for partners to share their cultural backgrounds and experiences. We could also highlight the different nationalities, ethnicities, and cultures within the group and avoid lumping everyone into a single category; instead, celebrate the unique traditions and histories each partner brings to our teams. We have a huge advantage working in the food-service industry that we can get to know one another through our traditional foods. There is so much joy around being able to share your families' recipes with others. Maryland’s New Wage Transparency and Paystub Notice Laws Are Effective Oct. 1, 2024 Effective October 1,2024, at time of hire, Maryland employers are required to provide workers with more specific written information, about the rate of pay, regular paydays, and leave benefits. Written pay statement must include this formation for each pay period. Note: This information may be in physical, electronic, or both Paystubs and Pay Statements must include: Gross and Net Pay: The amounts of gross pay and net pay earned during the period. Hours: The number of hours paid during the pay period. Pay Rates: If workers received pay at different rates during the pay period (e.g., overtime, work in different classifications, etc.), each rate should be listed, and hours paid at each rate should be broken out. Deductions: The name and amount of each deduction must be listed separately All other compensation, including commissions, bonuses, and tips, must be described and the amount must be listed Paystubs and Pay Statements. Under the Healthy Working Families Act, employers must provide workers with a written statement of their available leave balance. (As under the paystub law, this statement may be written or electronic, such as through an online portal.

Navigating Workplace Challenges: When to Consider Leaving a Toxic Job Environment In the professional realm, finding a job that not only meets our career aspirations but also brings us joy and fulfillment is akin to striking gold. However, this ideal scenario can quickly lose its sheen when faced with a toxic workplace culture. The heartbreak of leaving a job you love due to a hostile environment created by management and colleagues is a reality many professionals grapple with. It raises the question: How should one approach this difficult situation? Firstly, it's crucial to identify the signs of a toxic workplace, which may include constant negativity, lack of support, bullying behaviors, and an overall environment that impacts your mental health and work-life balance negatively. Recognizing these signs early can help in taking proactive steps. Communication is key. Attempting to address the issues directly with management or HR may sometimes lead to positive changes. It's important to document instances of toxicity as evidence. However, if multiple attempts at resolution lead nowhere, or if the situation escalates, it might be time to consider your well-being and professional growth elsewhere. Before making any decisions, it's wise to have a plan. Begin by updating your resume and reaching out to your network. Research potential employers thoroughly to avoid jumping from one toxic environment into another. Leaving a job, especially one you love, is never easy. Yet, protecting your mental health and finding an environment where you can thrive professionally and personally is paramount. Remember, being in a toxic workplace is not a reflection of your professional abilities or worth. This is a helpful reminder about the importance of the people piece. I coach leaders often on the importance of evaluating the person, and their attributes, not exclusively the paper presented. Resumes are an important component to the process; however, you can miss out on great candidates if you are weighted to heavily on the paper. EQ is as important as IQ.
