Never underestimate where Manual QA is needed. Recently, I needed to file for unemployment. Like almost everyone, I did that on the state's UC website. - The account creation page didn't save - The "search for account" page 404'd - Third attempt at creation worked, but "save" looped you back to Create an Account again I wrote a Bug Report and emailed it to them, and attached my resume. The next morning, at 8 AM, everything was fixed. Next I tried to create an account for the state career finder website. - Site would not let me create an account, saying it existed already - Searches for the existing account yielded nothing Quick phone call to the local office, and they explained the problem was the site was "being worked on" ... at 10 AM on a weekday, and to try again shortly. When it was back up the next day, - I could create an account, but not save it, and was always looped back to the account creation page. I wrote a Bug Report and emailed it to them, and attached my resume. Finally, I was randomly selected by the career site for an additional program. It required an in person or virtual interview, I chose virtual. - Every piece of information regarding signing in to that interview was outdated, on their site, and in the subsequent "confirmation" emails. It stated the interview would be via a Zoom-like app, and users on an Apple product had to download the app. The app in question did not exist in the App store. I had to confirm the details with the sender, and his reply contradicted everything I was just sent: - The website and emails all said what app to use for the virtual interview, and they would send a direct link just before the interview. - The app mentioned did not exist - The sender told me no, it would just be a phone call. - The link in the email took me to a page that doesn't exist. I wrote a Bug Report and emailed it to them, and attached my resume. And it isn't just websites. I sent a Bug Report to a MAJOR free streaming TV platform (I'm not going to name it) that consisted of 13 Bugs, on 4 different devices and platforms, complete with videos. The report was over 3 pages long, and almost all of the bugs had been present for at least 3 years - and I had older videos to show that. I wrote a Bug Report and emailed it to them, and attached my resume. Manual QA would have found every one of the problems I encountered. So to all my Manual QA people out there, you ARE needed. Your work IS noticed.

Senior Devs / Hiring Managers—during our live webinar yesterday, we polled a few hundred recent Comp Sci grads. 60% didn’t feel that they had enough experience in Java to qualify for an enterprise coding job. Instead they’d been pointed towards Python. 80% had no experience with Unit Testing. I know Comp Sci isn’t just about software engineering; but it’s by far the largest number of available jobs for grads. If jobs are the metric that Higher Ed is judged on, this seems like a huge failure. Does this line up with your experience? How are you dealing with this skills gap when you look to onboard junior talent?

Observation: 9/10 SWE's quit at “reading the docs”. Cut through the BS with this easy trick: Take action and build. Writing code is 100x easier than the docs make it sound. “Reading the docs” gave me crazy imposter syndrome: -Git -WPF -Kafka -OAuth -Angular -GraphQL -RabbitMQ -Kubernetes In ALL cases, I conquered my fears by building. Except for WPF. I gave up on that. And Kafka, that's for another day. Forcing yourself to build/code/deploy melts analysis paralysis. Then you'll say "oh that was pretty easy". Trust me, we aren't building rockets. Practice AND Study build true mastery.

If culture fit isn't the most important aspect of adding another developer to your team I know you don't ship much. I follow so many small companies that out deliver large ones it's crazy. 3- 10 person teams, ship ship ship ship ship...Why? The mission is ____ing LOCKED in, everyone is on same page from character to keyboard. Let me give y'all hiring managers a tip. When you have those two candidates, one has ALL the tools technically but you vibe better with the other who wants the gig more? Hire the latter, train 'em up. He began his career at Andersen Consulting, where he did information systems consulting for financial services and consumer packaged goods. Tim transitioned to product management while working at HP and later joined Oracle, where he led product teams and contributed to major acquisitions and integrations. Before his most recent role at Redis, he served in various leadership positions at Hortonworks and InfluxData. In our conversation, Tim talks about the importance of storytelling in product management — specifically, the ability to articulate why something is being built, the value it holds, and why people should be excited about it. He also discusses the critical role of transparency and demonstrating leadership in times of change. Transitioning into the ‘dark side of products’ You have a very interesting background. Can you tell us about your career and how you arrived at product management? My career has been a bit circuitous. I started my career in systems integration consulting at Anderson Consulting before it became Accenture. I spent four and a half years there working with various customers. Working in systems integration taught me the basics of product management — you’re building a specific system or an integration between systems for a customer, and you spend a lot of time talking about the business requirements. What are you trying to achieve? How will that happen? You’re looking at manual processes and automating them, looking at what happens next, and asking, “What’s upstream from this? What’s downstream from this?” These skills are perfectly transferable to the world of product management. I ended up doing almost a decade in professional services and transitioned into the “dark side” of products, as I like to say, after that. What would you say first attracted you to the idea of product management? Building something that people love and want to adopt and use. The challenge of pattern recognition and identification excites me. When you’re building something for a specific customer, you don’t have to generalize. You consider the requirements and build on them specifically; it’s a one-off, bespoke solution, and they have to run and operate it that way. But when you make the shift from that world into the world of products, there’s some intuition that you have to apply. Having balance and staying curious Can you elaborate on having that product management intuition you mentioned? This goes back to a video of Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA, I saw recently on LinkedIn where he says, “You need to ignore your customers.” And some people were piling in saying, “OK, let’s ignore our customers.” In my opinion, people are taking the wrong thing away from the video. Do you have all your contractors sign all your policies so they can contribute to your codebase directly? Or do you have the outsourced team work in a separate git repository and then have an employee merge to the main repo? Or some other model?

Native vs. Cross-Platform Development: My Perspective When it comes to choosing between native and cross-platform development, the debate often feels endless. But in my opinion, there’s no need for a debate at all. The answer is simple: choose what best aligns with your go-to-market strategy. If you’re a small team or working solo, just start with what you’re comfortable with. Why? Because users don’t care about your tech stack. They care about how your app solves their problems and the experience it provides—that’s it. Here’s another crucial point: you don’t have to launch your app on both iOS and Android simultaneously. Focus on where your target users are most active. Prioritize one platform, build a strong product, and then expand. Why I Choose Native Development I always lean toward native development, and here’s why. My approach has always been to release the product on a single platform first. Since I love iOS development, my natural choice is Swift. If I ever expand to another tech stack, I’d opt for Kotlin + Jetpack Compose for Android. When it comes to cross-platform development, let’s address the elephant in the room: Flutter. It wasn’t even mentioned in the last Google I/O, while Kotlin Multiplatform is steadily gaining traction with backing from both Google and JetBrains. If I had to go cross-platform, Kotlin Multiplatform would be my pick. But as someone who transitioned from React Native to iOS development, I genuinely believe the gap between native and cross-platform development has narrowed significantly. Declarative UI frameworks like SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose now allow you to build apps almost as quickly as you could with cross-platform tools—while delivering a more stable and maintainable product. What’s Your Choice? At the end of the day, the choice between native and cross-platform comes down to your goals, team size, and user needs. What has been your experience? TL;DR there’s a ton of companies that need me! Sure, there’s a lot of competition for tech jobs right now. I know I’m good at what I do. I can handle competition. The bigger problems are actually technical. There are job matching algorithms that don’t know the difference between an SDET and someone who tests the quality of medical devices. Trust me, you want me for the former, not the latter. Your industry may vary. There are application OCRs that do dog-knows-what importing your Resume, misinterpreting combinations of letters introducing "spelling errors" here and there. Sure, you fix them when you see them, but the application process doesn't always let you see what happened during the import. There are application submission forms that don’t accept punctuation marks in the text fields. I know all about Little Bobby Tables. This isn’t that. There are broken search engines and filters everywhere. Or they’re non-existent, which is just as bad or worse to scroll through hundreds of all manner of jobs around the world. There are content scrapers that overwhelm your alerts with 50 notices of the same job opening, one for each state, because it is listed as US Remote. There are content scrapers that republish the same jobs every few days and because they get new IDs every time, you have to reject them every time. There are permanent job listings that are never filled and never taken down. And don’t get me started on the applications with required fields of my HOME ADDRESS, as if I’m going to give that out to every potential employer in the world. If we get to the point of a background check, ok, but not before I even know if the opening is a scam or not.
