Tropicana disaster 2.0. So, it turns out Tropicana had another redesign this summer and the brand lost $30 million in sales, with some estimates that it cost the company $100 million overall. What went wrong? Designalytics surveyed 1000 orange juice buyers and 42% chose the old design because of its visual appeal. Is Tropicana alone in this? No. Designalytics has analysed nearly 2,000 redesigns launched to market. It found 40% reduce purchase conversion potential, a metric that has a greater than 93% correlation to in-market outcomes. In other words, disasters like this are happening to brands all the time; they are simply being dismissed. What can brand managers and insights professionals do? Engage semiotics experts to audit the before and after design routes to not only list out potential associations consumers can take away, but also use semiotics to audit consumer responses. At Bryter, we have expertise in combining semiotics and linguistics along with quantitative techniques informed by behavioural science to get an accurate reading of what consumer choices and responses may mean.
