Beautycounter – 💩 How to destroy $800+ million and 60,000 lives in just a couple of years. 👍This is one of the most surreal business stories I've read this year, take a look, it's really well worth it. Beautycounter was a fast-growing beauty startup, led by founder Gregg Renfrew, which had been fueled by $100 million in venture capital. In April 2021, after eight years in business, it was acquired by private equity firm the Carlyle Group in a $700-million deal that valued the company at $1 billion. Your brand name is the fourth or five task on the table. Assuming you want to develop a brand in the skincare industry, there are three things you want to do first and these are the three things I do with my clients. Number One: We assess the market , let me ask , how many people assessed the market they wanted to penetrate critically? To determine the key players, being you, the competition and the customers. What I usually do is ask questions like Who are the three best competitors and who are the three least we can beet , if we penetrate? Who are the people buying and do we want to sell to them too or we are looking at a bunch of different options? So? Three top competitors found ✅ (What are their core strengths? , and no we are not looking at their strengths o, we are snooping around for weaknesses) Three least competitors found ✅ We gather three weaknesses to turn to our strengths. Number Two: We assess the current buyers of the exact product we are looking at selling too. So, if you’re selling face cream 🧴, and the competitors are selling to everyone, assuming , we are study the portion of the market that buys more from them and sell to just them. Orrrrrrrrrrr We capitalize on the small portion that’s not buying too much, that’s because they will overlook. If we target their best selling customers, they will phight back and who has the strengths to engage in a combat? Okay let us assume the portion of the market that does not buy often are the women in their 30s , 40s and 50s, and specifically women who have skin reactions during and after pregnancies. (You see that’s a strong proposition because I read a lot about women who complain about their skin during and after pregnancies). How do women in their 30s, 40s and 50s behave? Definitely not like Gen Zs, although a fraction might behave like them. We will not be too quick, we will go and research about women in their 30s, 40s and 50s. Let’s understand how they behave, before connecting the dots on how they buy. After this…… ————- BRAND DEVELOPMENT STAGE What do we need for starters? Name: Identity: Purpose: Vision: Mission: Core Values: UBP: They sound easy yeah? You will know it’s not easy. First : Brand Name ( If you were to be a 30+ woman , what name will sound appealing to you) I can’t come up with a name now, but I know they are more like to love names that sound like it’s calming their nerves. Develop a couple names and test it with your friends, family , church members and even strangers, you can as well as what names they will love , watch out for those names and connect the dots. It must have a deep meaning, it must have a personality and it must sound great. Never forget! It’s the name and the people it’s meant for that will guide you and your design team to create a logo that matches the name and the people it serves.
