My then-employer supported an annual Service Project in partnership with a local organization. Employees submit proposals and presentations to Service Project Committee, and the Committee selects a project each year.
My project -- to support Durham Habitat for Humanity -- was selected in 2015. That year, 62 out of the 70 local employees participated by working up to two three-hour shifts and/or by donating supplies to the organization. I organized sign-ups, coordinated meals for employees at the sites, worked with the Durham Habitat coordinator to establish shifts, organized and executed a kick-off presentation, and organized and executed a wrap-up presentation that included a slide show presentation. Over 300 hours of labor were donated to Habitat for Humanity of Durham. In 2016, my organization again selected Habitat for Humanity of Durham as its service project partner, and I once again spearheaded the coordination and organization of this partnership. -

In my tenure as editor, I spearheaded the transition from creating print newsletters that were sent by mail to email newsletters. It was a challenging transition that required a lot of people facilitation skills between different interests in the club, as well as a lot of technical acumen to research, test, and choose an appropriate platform for email creation and delivery.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 helps get writers unstuck when they've written themselves down a dead-end path. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 helps writers say what they really mean. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 unlocks a new angle for the entire argument. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 can do so much good, especially when you least expect it. --- Yesterday, I asked a writer 𝘄𝗵𝘆 about her new chapter structure. She had been working through a draft that just wasn't landing her argument, so we backed up, and she drew up an outline focused on reader learnings and impact - what did readers need to know and in what order - so that she could make sure she was only including what was needed when it was needed. A compelling new structure emerged that tightened her thesis and made her evidence so much more effective. Asking 𝘄𝗵𝘆 allowed me to push at the edges of it to see how well it held together. At first, the writer worried I wanted her to rearrange something. That I thought something was wrong with her new outline. I reiterated that I simply wanted to hear her 𝘄𝗵𝘆 for why she made her central structural choice - not that there was anything wrong with it. So she told me... Her answer spelled out the clearest argument for not only her chapter, but her book as a whole, that I had heard in our several months working together! Reflecting on the significant influence of early trauma in my life, I realize how it affected not only me but also my loved ones and my journey toward becoming my true self. Acknowledging the need for help and choosing to heal from trauma is a challenging yet essential process. We often fail to recognize what we hide from ourselves. Facing the cumulative impacts of trauma—no matter how minor they may seem—can be overwhelmingly painful, leading us to avoid confronting these feelings. There are numerous paths and choices available for addressing trauma or even acknowledging its existence. We tend to downplay our experiences, thinking they’re not as severe as others. However, it’s important to remember that we often are unaware of the full extent of our struggles. As an executive coach, my mission is to support my clients in becoming the best versions of themselves. Part of this journey involves helping others face their pasts and, when necessary, forgive themselves. ☑️ *READ ABSTRACT BELOW:* Objective: Childhood trauma has been identified as a risk factor for self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (STBs), but the roles of different types of childhood trauma have not been clarified. The current study aimed to explore the association between different childhood trauma experiences and STB profiles. Method: The current study utilized data from a cross-sectional survey of 89,281 Chinese university and college students (Mage = 19.6). Participants were classified into one of six STBs groups, including individuals who are not suicidal or having nonsuicidal self-injury (NS) behavior, individuals with suicidal ideation (SI), individuals with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior, individuals with suicide attempt (SA), individuals with both NSSI and SI (NSSI + SI) and individuals with both NSSI and SA (NSSI + SA). Several multinomial logistic regressions were performed. Results: The individuals reporting more emotional abuse experiences are significantly more likely to report higher-risk STB profiles (OR =1.06-1.64). Emotional neglect is also a significant factor predicting higher STB risk compared to NS and SI groups (OR = 1.02-1.08). Mixed findings were found for physical neglect and sexual abuse, as they show different directions of risk-predicting effects in different STB groups. Physical abuse did not significantly predict STBs. Conclusions: Our results indicate that exposure to childhood emotional abuse increase the risk for all types of STBs, which calls for special attention in future suicide prevention and intervention programs. Our findings further imply possible roles for different subtypes of traumatic experiences to trigger different SBTs, which warrant future exploration. I just finished Ryan M. Niemiec's The Mindfulness and Character Strengths Workbook and have posted a detailed review on Somatic Psychotherapy Today's website. It was an eye opening experience weaving in character strengths with mindfulness practices. The workbook was written to provide a hands on workbook for general readers interested in mindfulness and character strengths and for practitioners leading Mindfulness-Based Strengths Practice groups. When I reviewed Ryan textbook, Character Strengths Interventions: A Field Guide for Practitioners, in 2017, I noted the need for hands-on activities for readers to use, access to audio meditations, and so forth. And here we have it: The Mindfulness and Character Strengths Workbook is everything I hoped for and more. It is a well-written, easy-to-follow, detailed to the nth degree workbook with extensive, free online materials to support the process including audio-guided meditations. Congratulations Ryan on a much-needed workbook to support people exploring character strengths and their integration with mindfulness. Before healing from trauma can really happen, we need to be safely associated to the body or ‘somatized’. And for this to happen, often safety has to first arise within a relational dynamic. Im really looking forward to teaching ‘Trauma-informed Relational Somatics’ in LA this September (module 1) and next February (module 2). If you’re a therapsit, coach, bodyworker or healthcare practitioner, this is an integrative professional development training that will support you to understand the somatic and relational componinets of trauma in a new way and inspire a dynamic shift in the way you undertand and support your clients/patients. This is the first time the training will be offered on the West Coast, and I’m looking forward to meeting the group that gathers to do this deep work. Note, this is an experiential training, so be prepared to not only learn, but to experience and process. My favorite emoji is the MAGNIFYING GLASS 🔍, facing either way 🔎 for two (2) different options to choose from. I like to use this clever emoji when I want to take a closer look at specific English or Business English vocabulary. Yes, it may seem counterintuitive that I’m an English teacher and I love emojis, but I can appreciate a helpful communication tool used to convey meaning. 🇺🇸 🥰 🇳🇱 I use this emoji often to convey thanks. 🙏 This emoji with hands forming a heart is pretty universal. 🫶 This emoji is the Korean 🇰🇷 hand sign for love, forming a heart. (The tips of the crossed index finger and thumb form the top of the heart ♥️.) 🫰 My teenage daughter texted me this emoji with a dark moon. 🌚 Do you know what it means? No, neither did I. It’s a good thing there is an online emoji encyclopedia to reference for the meaning. Symptoms of hyperactivity in ADHD 1. Deficient motor inhibition (restless, hyperactive) 2. Impulsive cognition (difficulty in suppressing task irrelevant thoughts and rapid decision making) 4. Impulsive motivation (prefer immediate gratification). 5. Emotion dysregulation (impulsivenessthe, immature response, cannot moderate and control the emotions but they understand the emotions). Note: Hyperactivity (Restlessness) in ADHD decreases with age.
