How to #lead now... 16 experiences how to lead in change. Today #4: IT'S IN YOUR HEAD. ...based on my virtual keynote (GERMAN language) from June 27, 2024 at the Leadership Digital Summit. English transcript: If I can take a penalty like Lewandowski or Modric did a few days ago, then I have two options. First of all, I'll say that I'm probably really nervous because everyone is watching. But at the same time, I've been chosen to take the shot. That means a certain expectation, appreciation, but of course huge pressure. Now it mainly happens in the head and you can see it like this: man, that's a huge goal, I can shoot from the bottom left, top right and so on. I see a huge opportunity or I see a problem because the guy is there, dancing around it, looking at me strangely, so I always see these barriers and the same applies to change. You focus on these opportunities or on the barriers. You can't ignore one or the other, but this basic attitude is important because it transfers to the team, to the thing itself and so on. So I always try to see it positively, with respect for the negative.

How to #lead now... 16 experiences how to lead in change. Today #5: THE TRUTH LIES IN THE DEPTHS. ...based on my virtual keynote (GERMAN language) from June 27, 2024 at the Leadership Digital Summit. English transcript: Number five: I don't stay superficial. The truth lies in the depths. Why? Because if I face a company and I want to change something, then it affects different departments, different reporting channels, bosses, teams and so on. And of course I can stay on the surface and say, yes, we have marketing here, this is the head of marketing and this is sales and this is region of the southern Germany and so on. But in reality it is much more complex. That means that this map is only part of the territory, which always looks different. And I have to understand who can work with whom, who influences whom, what interests there are, maybe even outside the company. I have to understand, operate and manage the entire network so that the new, the change happens. And ignoring that is very, very dangerous, in both directions. That means it will be stopped or it will come back to haunt me because I didn't think of something. It is very important to really look at the entire network and not just the surface. When it comes to who makes the decisions, who has what interests, who can or cannot work with whom, and so on.

How to #lead now... (english transcription) The first question for me was, how does something new come into the world? Everything is basically occupied, the brain is full, the hard drive is full, the calendar is full. How does something new come into the world? And for me it is basically this overlap. Why? Because there are people who say: hey, man, we could do that, we have aspirations, visions. We can fly to the moon. Like Elon Musk, he also has the craziest ideas. Children have the craziest ideas: where would my extra two eyes be if I had four eyes. The adults say: behind my head. The child says: here in my throat, because I could see my heart. So, it's really easy to go crazy. And there are people in every team who say: hey, man, why don't we do it like this and like that and like that.  Of course there are others who say: aha, data protection, legal issues. We've already done that. We don't need it and so on. And the new thing for me arises exactly in the middle, from this AND. And as a manager I of course sometimes have to make a decision and not make everyone happy, but the more overlap, the more sustainable the new thing will be. And that is practically my experience number one.

How to #lead now...THE PRICE. 16 experiences how to lead in change. Today #12: THE PRICING. ...based on my virtual keynote (GERMAN language) from June 27, 2024 at the Leadership Digital Summit. English transcript: Number twelve. Yes, if I have done all that, then I have something. How much does it cost? How do I arrive at a price? There are actually only four strategies for how a price is created. Most people use cost plus or maybe they look at the competition and so on. Very few assume what the willingness to pay is. What is the customer comparing and how do they compare and so on. And price is an incredible lever for startups and for large companies to have more or less profit image. In order to reinvest this profit image. And that is a positive vicious circle, so to speak, because I simply have more money to invest, to develop myself and so on. So price is actually the be-all and end-all in every company. And if I just communicate the price, then I have missed a huge opportunity to communicate with PR. That is the bottom part of the picture, what you cannot see. What you package the price with. You probably know how Steve Jobs did it with the iPhone and the iPad. So price communication is really important. Internally and externally it is often underestimated - that is also my experience. Please communicate and don't just share, because then it might not be received correctly.

Mind-wandering: ever wondered about the speed at which we speak and think? 🤔 My latest drawing, inspired by a #GenerativeLeaders conversation with Servane Mouazan ICF PCC and Julia Rebholz, shows the contrast: we speak 💬 100 words per minute, but our minds race with 900 thoughts 💭 per minute. Research by Killingsworth and Gilbert (2010) supports this, revealing that our minds are constantly active, with about 47% of our time spent in #MindWandering —thoughts unrelated to our current activity. The dynamic nature of our inner world is funny yet profound. While we carefully choose our words, it's quite likely that the listener's mind is off on its own mind-wandering adventure. Connections, reactions, ideas, resistance, insecurities? In other words, we listen from the inside out. It’s a necessary part of the process for anyone pursuing an ACC, PCC or MCC Credential and it’s easy to see mentor coaching as a finite relationship—a stepping stone to gaining your credential. They are out, the #ICF #Coachingsupervision #competencymodel Thank you Joel DiGirolamo Thomas Tkach Carrie Abner, CAE and all those who have worked diligently on this growing our field. My wish for 2025 - an ICF #credential and approval of programmes as opposed to just CCEs plus SUPERvision even more embedded in credentialing and renewal… ICF have chosen to focus the model on Coaching SUPERvision, however, our faculty at #CoachME note that it can be transferable for SUPERvising mentors, leaders, OD and L&D professionals, trainers, co-coaches, facilitators… Now for a bit of debate and generative thinking. 🤔 I find the phrase ‘coaching the coach’ leads to confusion in the field. We always advocate, right from initial coach training on our Association for Coaching and our ICF Level 1 programmes coaches having coaching for themselves for the experience (of course!). We prefer to say a coaching style of SUPERvision which can be one way to SUPERvise. This discussion came up this week in our #emcc #esqa training for #esia and some of the group were surprised at my stance due to my usually eclectic approach blending, for example somatic work with gestalt approaches and psychodynamic… My take is that if you are coach me on my stuff such as eg a relationships, we may talk about the ways that beliefs or habits play out in my different relationships including with clients and so the topic could come up in SUPERvision with a focus on the business side of coaching work and on the behaviours, ways of being too and yet it is a different focus. Of course, the restorative element of SUPERvision may also shine a light on the topic too. Maybe a dotted line around SUPERvision and coaching the coach, one that is permeable as opposed to being a thick line or division? Of course, in SUPERvision we may also ask for, or a SUPERvisor may offer an opinion or advice from experience or from research and we don’t have to leave with action and accountability (to put the end of a session bluntly). I know Michelle Lucas refers to coaching the coach in a write up as part of her new model too and Julia Carden PhD, PCC, FCIPD has also shared on this this week. 7 places where you can sprinkle the holistic approach in the coaching session You know we love the holistic approach. We’ve taken the ICF Core Competencies, Ethics and Standards and added a holistic approach or philosophy to the ICF framework of 8 Core Competencies. It’s this combination that gives the coaching a strong inner and outer inter-connection while still allowing the Client to lead and incorporate the levels to their liking. As students start to advance, we get a bit more technical in the use of exercises and holistic strategies. Here’s 7 places you could explore holistic exercises or questions to thread through a holistic approach that includes the whole person not just 1. Start of the session - Could sound like…”Would it be helpful if we started our session today with a minute of breathing so that we center, ground and can call in your intention for today’s coaching conversation or is there something else you want before starting today ? 2. Clearing - Could sound like…”Anything need to be cleared mind, body or spirit so that you can we can be fully present to your topic for today’s coaching conversation or are you ready start coaching now?” 3. Establishes Agreements - Could sound like…”What else might we need to consider mind, body or spirit that would be useful to address our agreement for the day?” 4. Evoking Awareness - Could sound like…”If you brought a holistic approach to this situation, what might you add or eliminate?” 5. Facilitates Client Growth - Could sound like…”Which level (mental, emotional, spiritual or physical) could support you and your next steps? or Which level (mental, emotional, spiritual or physical) might get in the way of you completing your steps this week?” 6. End of the call - Could sound like…”How might we end our coaching conversation today that would support you holistically?” 7. In between sessions - Could sound like…”How might you support yourself in between our coaching sessions to support your mind, body and spirit? or How might you support yourself holistically in between our coaching conversations so that you can remain balanced and connected?” Any other ideas?
