Sometimes the most powerful transformations come from unexpected places. One of our students joined our HBCU tour last year simply hoping for an out-of-state trip. As a chaperone, I watched him give us all a run for our money (if you know, you know 😅). But underneath that challenging exterior, I saw something special. He shared something profound during our conversations - no one had ever talked to him about college before. He didn't believe he was "college material" or that higher education was even possible for him. Every day during our tour, I made it a point to tell him I believed in him. That college wasn't just for "other people" - it was absolutely possible for him too. Sometimes all it takes is one person consistently speaking hope and possibility into a young person's life. After we returned home, I kept my promise to stay connected. Each school visit, I saw a transformation happening. The student who once seemed uninterested was now more focused, driven, carrying himself with new purpose. Despite the challenges he gave us on the trip, I never stopped believing in him and reminding him of his potential. Yesterday, my phone lit up with a picture that brought tears to my eyes - there he was, submitting applications to several HBCUs! He now sees college not as an impossible dream, but as his next step forward. This is why we do this work in our district. Sometimes it takes leaving familiar surroundings to see new possibilities. When you witness a student starting to believe in themselves and their potential... there's no feeling quite like it. #IBelieveinFUSD #StudentSuccess #HBCUBound

The most recent Black Thriving in America 2024 Report was published this month by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund in collaboration with the Gallup Center on Black Voices and led by Camille Lloyd. The report represents the voices of 40 million Black Americans and incorporates various measures of racial equity across key life and work factors such as social and financial wellbeing, dignity in public and respect and recognition at work. 💡 The report found that 46% of Black American employees strongly agree they are treated with respect at work. This reflects an increase in experiences of respect among Black employees since 2023 and is an encouraging data point as the question explored workplace treatment, encouragement to develop and the inclusion of opinions across teams. In a time when DEI is consistently under fire, this report highlights key areas of progress while recognizing persisting disparities. VJAS Save the Dates as We Prepare to Go Back in Person May 31, 2025   VJAS Symposium ‘25 will be Hybrid. This will allow students to attend in person and virtually on May 31 at Ferrum. How will we achieve this? 1.  VJAS Membership is Free. Join now. 2.  VJAS paper submission has been reduced to $35 with a due date submission deadline of February 21, 2025. 3.  The proposed registration package from Ferrum is being worked on but looks to be the following: A. The Day Registration Cost per Participant will be approximately $35, which includes the campus use fee, usage costs, and the cost of lunch for the participant. B. Overnight dormitory costs for students, chaperones, and parents will be determined later in January. C. Can AI help enhance the power in #leadership voices? Yes! Powerful presentation by Mike Grandinetti, global #innovation consultant, human-centric design thinking expert, entrepreneur, consultant, Harvard University faculty, TEDxBabson speaker "Harnessing the Power of #AI", and more.... He shared that according to Boston Consulting Group (BCG) recent survey of consultants, those consultants with access to AI had: 📣 40% increase in quality of tasks completed 📣 25% faster task completion 📣 12% more tasks completed Recently, he spoke with my Leading, Learning, & Change course students about many new AI applications and technology platforms in business. He then shared how students can ethically use AI in ways to elevate their voices, innovation and performance ---not replace them or their voice. We often assume everyone has access to the same tools and time. But Mike shared information about many ways students can access tools and take control of their learning. Key insights: 📣AI can give you more time to innovate in ways unique to your own voice, experience and research --- when used ethically. 📣How can we work together to examine how accessibility these new technologies are to all students -- in ways that enhance their motivation and voice, while adding positive impact to business and society? 📣What is our role as educators when all students do not have access to the same tools with the same resources (financial, time, etc)? 📣Motivating student learning increases with academic-business partnerships that connect experts with students.
