Also featured in "A Practical Guide to Ethics in Public Relations" by Dr. Regina Luttrell. The AWPS competition introduces the practical applications of the core principles that define public relations as a critical management function, and encourages research that contributes to the profession's body of knowledge. This case study - Fatal Derailment: Is Amtrak’s Reputation Riding on its Response to the Wreck of Train 188? - was selected as the second prize winner. Faculty advisor - Dr. Laurence Mussio.

    Abstract:
On May 12, 2015, Amtrak train 188 accelerated to 106 miles per hour in a 50 mile-per-hour zone before derailing on a sharp curve. In its wake, eight passengers perished and hundreds more were hospitalized. Two main issues surfaced: the engineer’s condition and the lack of technology that regulators and Amtrak agree would have prevented the fatal accident. This case puts Amtrak’s response through a reputation management prism as it examines Amtrak’s effectiveness at crisis communication with its employees and the media, and looks at the experiences of two high-profile victims who are also members of the fourth estate.
