I was recently on a discovery call with a DTC brand generating $300K in annual sales. Throughout the conversation, I kept hearing the same challenges: 🗣️ "We need to fix our paid ads." 🗣️ "Our Facebook ads aren't delivering enough ROI." 🗣️ "We want our new agency to increase revenue by 60% next year." It became clear they weren’t searching for a marketing agency—they were searching for a magician. Here’s the reality: paid ads alone can’t fix foundational issues like: ❌ No organic strategy ❌ Lack of unique selling proposition ❌ Low website conversion rates ❌ Poor-quality creative assets (photos/videos) ❌ Weak brand positioning ❌ Ineffective copywriting ❌ Clunky user experience ❌ No influencer or community-building strategy I had to be honest with them: we weren’t the right fit unless they were ready to tackle these core problems first. This came up during a recent client call (well, bike ride). For small companies with pinched budgets, is SEO or PPC the better option? There's no universal answer - but there is a metaphor. Think of SEO as digging a canal to guide a stream to your backyard. It's a lot of work, and it takes a while, but then you've got free water out back for the long haul. Think of PPC as calling a water company. Sure, they'll bring you a jug whenever you pony up the cash, but if you stop paying, they stop showing up. Many DTC brands will make a huge SMS mistake this holiday season. Give me 30 seconds to warn you: SMS is awesome. Unfortunately, not all DTC brands leverage it. In fact, there are far more brands leveraging email exclusively than SMS exclusively. In preparation for BFCM, many of these brands decide to incorporate SMS into their strategy. The problem is they start too late. We’re 4 months away from BF/CM. You might be wondering...why address this issue so soon? I mean…couldn’t you just take customer data and port it over to SMS? Not quite – having the phone numbers of customers isn’t the same as having an SMS list. You must have their consent to abide by compliance and regulations. Don’t risk your brand's reputation by cutting corners. Building an SMS list ethically takes a few months. You should start now, earn their trust, and warm them up with exclusive offers. DTC brands: Is your SMS marketing getting better/worse? Use these 3 metrics. You'll know. Don't look at "Total revenue" from SMS marketing.  That's a vanity metric. It's misleading. Focus on these 3 metrics. Revenue will follow. 1. Total Texts Sent Sending more texts means reaching more customers. This number must grow over time. • Scale volume, but keep it relevant • Avoid being intrusive • More texts, more eyes 2. Click-Through Rates (CTR) CTR = engagement. Don't scale if CTR drops. • Craft compelling messages • Include clear, clickable links • Segment your audience 3. Return on Investment (ROI) ROI is the bottom line. Be sustainable. • Ensure campaigns are profitable • Balance costs with returns • ROI makes this sustainable Make sure these metrics are at the core of your strategy.
