General Motors hiring Tim Twerdahl from Apple as their new vice president of product management might appear counterintuitive at a time when the company is reducing headcount by 1,000 software engineers. It isn’t. Twerdahl’s background with ApplePay among other post-sales services hints at #gm ‘s desire to keep customers engaged with post-vehicle sale digital products and services. What those could be aren’t yet known. Layoffs are never easy, and losing great colleagues is always difficult. If you're going through your first layoff, here are some words to live by: - Do things well, no matter the job. You represent yourself and your family each day. - Be a great teammate. Nothing of significance is accomplished in a silo. - Maintain the relationships you build along the way. - Strive for hands-on experience and opportunity. Walk through the door that opens when the opportunity shows up. - Stop wasting the free time you have outside of work. Learn a new skill. Build your resume. - Always have a plan B. Companies will ALWAYS make money decisions. That includes headcount reduction. - Your employer doesn’t own you, they simply pay rent for your time. Remember, this is your life to own, not theirs.

Potential richness It just takes one instant to cross the finish line. Yet you go through every step of the race to get to that instant. In reaching any goal, you have to put forth many individual efforts that don’t yield immediate results. Only when every previous step is done and you complete the final step does the achievement become yours. Those steps along the way can feel unrewarded, and that might be discouraging. So it’s important to keep yourself reminded of the progress you’re making, even when you have little in the moment to show for it. Although your destination is far away in the distance, you’re advancing toward it right here and now. Though you’re not yet close enough to see it, you are working your way in the right direction. The longer you persist the more value you’re able to create. As you invest your time and effort you’re making the eventual result more meaningful. As you complete each step along the way, envision the potential richness it is adding to your life. Be inspired to keep going all the way to where that potential richness becomes fully realized.
