Looks like traditional automakers still believe that making software is just a matter of hiring more engineers to produce more software in less time. Besides that, it looks like many try to apply the same approaches and hierarchies used to build vehicles in the past, to build complex pieces of software now.

There is simply no excuse for a mess like this. This exposes the complete inability of product designers, product engineers and product management to appreciate how difficult software development, integration, and maintenance can be, and blithely proceed to change things which do not need to be fixed, adding unnecessary features which do not work, and then roll it all out as if it were a merely a markering slogan which can be as full of holes as a sieve. Which, actually, is precisely what these nightmarish software cludges on wheels are: marketing exercises out to catch as many fools as possible.

It is interesting to see how the move to electric powertrains in the automotive industry has created other opportunities for innovation. Mercedes have recently announced plans for a new braking system that is fully enclosed in the vehicle and integrated with the powertrain. Amazingly, the new brake system should last the lifetime of the vehicle without requiring maintenance. This is in part due to the regenerative braking capabilities of electric powertrains that reduce usage of conventional brakes. The system works with a spinning brake pad that is squeezed between two stationary discs. As the system is fully enclosed, it is quieter and prevents brake dust emissions, which will soon be regulated under the incoming EU7 standards.

German OEM Mercedes-Benz AG recently announced they will be manufacturing combustion engine vehicles way into the next decade, despite plans to go all Electric by 2030. Mercedes Benz has backtracked on its previous plan to go all-electric by 2030, with the car giant now saying that it'll continue to offer a mix of Electric Vehicles (EVs), and combustion engine cars well into the next decade. Many automotive giants have set themselves hard targets to deliver an electric-only model range, most of which coincide with numerous government announcements surrounding a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 – although that has already been pushed back to 2035 in the UK and other markets. Mercedes-Benz was one such manufacturer to announce that it would go 'electric only' in 2021, stating that "by the end of the decade, Mercedes-Benz will be ready to go fully electric – wherever market conditions permit". But it seems that current market conditions have forced a backtrack on the statement, as Ola Kaellenius, the group's CEO, claims that an era where EVs would cost the same as an equivalent petrol or diesel car is still “many years away”. He added: "The company plans to be in a position to cater to different customer needs, whether it’s an all-electric drivetrain or an electrified combustion engine, until well into the 2030s".
