Newest episode of #HealthAndVeritas with guest, Mitesh Rao, MD, CEO of OMNY Health talking about democratizing access to healthcare data and improving health through more reliable information. Harlan Krumholz talks about "The business case for quality: estimating lives saved and harms avoided in a value-based purchasing model" an article in Health Affairs Scholar that returns us to the uncomfortable domain of asking why our "system" doesn't do more to save lives and improve health outcomes. I talk about Marijuana. I am concerned that we are watching a slow moving catastrophe due to the desire to decriminalize and reduce controls over Cannabis and THC-containing products (which is good) while paying too little attention to quality and regulations. Healthcare remains one of the most change-resistant industries, uniquely distinguished by its negative per-capita productivity growth and continued reliance on fax machines. This week, I had the privilege of joining leaders from CVS, Amazon, NVIDIA, and Oracle through the Frist Cressey Ventures team to discuss reimagining healthcare with patients at the center. It's encouraging to see major corporations taking a long-term, patient-centric approach to healthcare transformation, questioning fundamental assumptions about our current system. However, the challenges are real. Forward, despite raising hundreds of millions and bringing fresh "outside healthcare" perspectives to reimagine primary care, recently shut down due to unsustainable economics. They're not alone - 2024 has seen major retailers like Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, and Dollar General either exit or scale back their physical healthcare presence. In conversations with healthcare leaders, there's growing excitement about Generative AI's potential to drive change. Yet, the industry's complexity demands both optimism and humility. Transforming healthcare requires not just innovative technology, but a deep understanding of its unique challenges. Thanks to Navid Farzad, Olivia Capra, Bill Frist, M.D. and the whole FCV team for bringing the conversations together, and getting us into some nature at the same time!

Every Health Tech Innovation sounds great in theory… BUT health systems should “stress test” the idea to see if it works for YOU. Here’s how 👇 Suppose you were considering something like SeamlessMD to provide digital care journeys pre/post-surgery, oncology, chronic care, etc. Sure it sounds great on paper to provide every patient with a digital experience to guide them with reminders, education and symptom tracking. But before you get started, here are 5 questions your health system stakeholders need to ask yourselves: 1️⃣ Does the vendor’s product and track record give us confidence in their ability to deliver this great sounding innovation? If not, are we the right health system to take on this level of risk? 2️⃣ Do we have clinical champions across physicians, nurses, allied health, etc. willing to engage in the clinical content review process? Because you need to be aligned on the clinical content being delivered to patients. 3️⃣ Does IT have the resources to integrate with the platform to automate patient enrollment? Or are we willing to use it as a standalone platform and have staff willing to spend 30 seconds to enroll a patient in the backend? 4️⃣ Are we willing to train staff on how to educate and promote this initiative to patients and families? Remember that staff endorsement highly correlates with patient adoption. Digital Health doesn’t sell itself. 5️⃣ Do we want to take full advantage of the platform and enable alerts and dashboards to remotely monitor patients? It’s not a requirement but it has a bigger impact on outcomes, especially readmissions and ED visits. As you work through these questions, you will find out if your team is motivated and willing to engage fully in the Digital Transformation and change management process needed to make the Tech successful. Also, the better a Vendor Partner, the more they can actually guide you through these questions. In many cases they may make it easier for you to get to a “Yes” because they have proven playbooks and processes that make your staff more confident in the change management required. Now if you end up going through this “stress test” and realize the innovation isn’t the right fit, that doesn’t mean you’ll never do it… It just might mean it doesn’t make sense today. But better to realize that upfront than to buy a great Product… and then fail the implementation because you didn’t think about the People and Process aspects beforehand.

Walmart closing 51 Health Centers over “Lack of Profitability!” Walmart Health Virtual Care (telemedicine) offerings will also end. Article by Daniella Alessandra Genovese Fox Business Network April 30, 2024 MY TAKE: · What does ‘lack of Profitability” really MEAN? o Is it meant that this service line is losing money – financially upside down? o Or does it mean that the line is not producing the “EXCESS PROFITS” that were envisioned - and that corporate leaders and shareholders demand? · Healthcare delivery is NOT a simple business model, though increasingly we see corporate entities entering this arena, often envisioning large profits or - in the case of private equity - valuable ASSETS whose value can be accelerated over short periods - or at least sold off as value-added components. · It has been said that the LURE of ‘excess profit’ invariably leads to GREED, and that in healthcare - greed invariable leads to worsening conditions within healthcare workplaces and worsening outcomes for patients! Really exciting news out of the Oracle Healthcare Summit in the US this week. Oracle Healthcare is promising a new #EMR “built from the ground up” to be released in 2025 and embedding #AI across the entire clinical workflow. Seema Verma told the conference that the new platform was not “a refurbished EHR”, saying that “in this day and age, you can’t leverage modern technology by bolting new innovation to something built in the 1990s”. This is spot on and what many in the #digitalhealth community have been saying for some time. We need a #nextgenEMR designed to embed AI across the whole workflow with modern tools for automation, documentation, and tasking that uses conversational AI to navigate and create tasks and documentation, to drive down the #clinicianburnout. 100% agree with her statement: “One of today’s most important and widely used healthcare technologies, the EHR, has not lived up to its promise.'' Excited to see how this development from Oracle will disrupt the EMR market. Bruce Pedersen https://lnkd.in/gy5E9Cvv

AI powered healthcare technology is garnering significant interest in implementation. As it evolves, so are the regulations around it. Recently, the FDA announced clearance for AliveCor’s AI technology in cardiology. The technology can predict cardiac conditions, including heart attacks with a reduced lead set. Simultaneously, the FDA also granted approval for AliveCor’s handheld ECG model. The model uses a single cable system, is lightweight, and easy to use for medical professionals. It is now also clinically proven. The FDA’s approval of this new technology is important, not only because it helps get life-saving technology in the hands of physicians, but because it is an essential part of determining the future of regulation. As new healthcare technology involving AI is introduced for FDA approval, the agency will look to past cases. The boundaries they set will determine what technology can get into the hands of people who need it most. #FDA #MedicalTechnology #AI

Bend the Trend: Transform healthcare spend and outcomes In recent years, the healthcare sector has been grappling with escalating costs and suboptimal patient health outcomes. The challenge of bending the trend in healthcare spend while improving patient outcomes is a multifaceted issue that demands innovative solutions and a paradigm shift in how we approach healthcare delivery. Below are a few transformative strategies that need to be implemented drive this change 1.) Embracing Value-Based Care One of the most promising strategies to bend the trend in healthcare spending, specific to medication management is the shift from volume based to value-based care. This model incentivizes providers based on patient health outcomes rather than the number of services provided and sets the stage for pharmacists and providers to work better together to ensure patients are on the most clinically and cost effective therapies. By focusing on quality over quantity, value-based care aims to reduce preventable, medication related hospitalizations; unnecessary procedures; and hospital readmissions, ultimately lowering costs and improving patient health. 2.) Leveraging Technology and Data Analytics The integration of advanced technology and data analytics is revolutionizing the healthcare landscape. These tools enable providers to make data-driven decisions, predict patient needs, and personalize treatment plans. They also have the ability to allow pharmacies and vendors to provide actionable data to ensure patients are on the most optimal medication regimen, preventing medication related problems and predicting unfavorable outcomes, allowing for proactive intervention and resource allocation. 3.)Addressing Social Determinants of Health Healthcare outcomes are significantly influenced by social determinants such as educations, socioeconomic status, and living conditions. Addressing these factors is crucial for improving patient health and reducing overall healthcare costs. 4.)Promoting Health Literacy and Patient Engagement Educating patients about their health and involving them in the decision-making processes is essential for achieving better health outcomes and reducing costs. 5.)Innovating Payment Models and Aligning Incentives Innovative payment models that align financial incentives with patient outcomes are critical for bending the cost curve. Bending the trend in healthcare spend while enhancing patient health outcomes requires a holistic and collaborative approach. By embracing the above strategies, we can create a sustainable healthcare system that delivers high-quality care at a lower cost. The journey towards this transformation is complex, but with collective effort and commitment and the focus in the right place, it is undoubtedly achievable! #PatientOutcomes #ValueBasedCare #HealthTech #DataAnalytics #HealthcareInnovation #PatientEngagement #HealthcareCosts #HealthcareTransformation

Been reading a fair bit this week about the entrances of exits of large organizations in the healthcare technology sectors. To me, it keeps coming back to how healthcare is truly different from the typical private investment model of business and why those of us that have been in healthcare for decades keep saying that healthcare math "is different." Millions . . . no BILLIONS of dollars are being invested and lost in healthcare. Buildings built and empty. People hired and laid off. Companies stood up and folded. Service lines expanded, then shelved. All in search of the next big ROI. In the end - we care for people. Yes, we need to be capitalists and there is no mission without margin. But we need to keep patients and caregivers in the forefront of our decisions. Not profit and loss. Pick a service. Do it exceptionally well. Double and triple down on consumer, physician, and employee experience, be strategic and relentless in contracting for reimbursement for that service, and own that space. You will make money. You will make a difference.
