Having attended two separate healthcare conferences last week, it's clear that a number of executives advocating for #AI are not actually using it themselves. How do I know? Because their communications could easily have been improved with #AI. If you are a healthcare leader: 1. Start using AI on a daily basis....to assist with writing, create images, synthesize information, or compare disparate topics. 2. In your presentations, make it clear that you are personally using AI. This is especially true if you are asking your teams to "AI our operations". Rural health. Is the one we’re we need to see improvement not in care, but in operational efficiency. So nice to see implementation of AI methodologies. I have been a bit of a sceptic, AI tool tries to save physican and care provider time, but than they are over burdened with administrative tasks. So glad to see AI Grand Rounds giving a realistic picture of what is happening by in the field and not just hype. If we want real victories, we need to tackle at multiple levels, AI is absolutely a yes these days, but organizations should adapt and want to make provider lives better. Early in my career we spent a lot of time focused on articulating differentiators with clients as we were at the beginning of a brand evolution. Many trips and meetings with Antonio Poag Daniel Giorno Trey German Arpan Biswas Michael Kelly Venu Yeluripati Annabeth Daly and many more gave us perspective on what ‘good’ looked like. It was an absolute pleasure to join the Temy podcast last week to talk about the future of surgery and the role AI will play! I think people underestimate the impact these technological advancements will have, but it's important to make sure we're targeting the right things. While LLMs are all the rage these days, that's not the only space where AI is going to completely revolutionize a hospital's workflow. We need to make sure we're looking at a hospital workflows holistically and working to get staff focused on the most important aspects of their work. We don't need to automate doctors, we need to give them the tools to be as efficient as possible. CONSOLIDATION IN HEALTHCARE IS DRIVING UP THE COST OF HEALTHCARE: This is another great article objectively demonstrating that consolidation in the US healthcare system is driving up costs without a significant impact on quality of care. More bang for the buck? It unfortunately doesn't look like it....... With total US healthcare expenditure nearing 20% of GDP, pragmatic policies and actions must take place at the Federal level to alter this unsustainable trajectory. - Physician services delivered within health systems cost 12-26% more, compared with independent practices. - System-based hospital services cost 31% more compared with care delivered by independent hospitals. Should the Federal Trade Commission step in and assess the need and legality of breaking up the gargantuan health systems and health insurers to limit their massive power in the market and drive down costs? Many of the bloated and consolidated health insurers are also ripping off Medicare to the tune of billions with their blatant fraudulent activities. Thats a whole different but important story. Great new insight from our Pivotal Analytics team. We spend a lot of time preaching about the value of localized data and this infographic is great way to see that in action - demand for Cardiology varies a LOT on a market-to-market basis. Utilizing claims data as an input allows us to tailor insight to a local population, something we see far too few people doing on a regular basis - I continue to be surprised how many strategy leaders rely on demand intel driven by national benchmarks.

I wish this Becker's Healthcare post was grounded in peer-reviewed research rather than a blog post, especially given how important the topic is. Some of the assumptions presented here are quite off. While I completely agree that AI can greatly impact radiologists’ interpretation times, improve patient outcomes, and boost ROI, the interpretation times used in this post are simply not realistic. As someone who’s conducted dozens of reader studies, I can tell you that the average X-ray interpretation time is closer to 90 seconds, not the 15 minutes mentioned here. When we focus specifically on chest X-rays, the reading time is significantly lower. For example, a recent peer-reviewed study in Nature (https://lnkd.in/g5WZqhrv) found that chest X-ray interpretation times are about 15 seconds without AI and 13 seconds with AI. These are much more accurate times, and I think it would make sense to redo the calculations in this post using figures like these. Additionally, there's another study (https://lnkd.in/gw8sk6c3) showing a reduction in reading times from 10–65 seconds to 6–27 seconds with AI. This underscores how AI can enhance efficiency, but the numbers need to be realistic for the impact to be properly understood. Finally, I want to highlight another study (https://lnkd.in/gVnZE_PX) that excluded cases with interpretation times over 120 seconds due to interruptions. Interestingly, in that study, reading time increased from 14 seconds without AI to 19 seconds with AI, which emphasizes that context matters and that not all AI solutions have the same effect. In short, 15 minutes for X-ray interpretation is completely unrealistic, and I believe the discussion should be grounded in data from studies like these for a more accurate perspective. Physicians properly using AI "will require a massive educational push in medical school and beyond". Really??? The entire premise (and promise) of AI is that it is supposed to materially improve physicians' jobs by seamlessly automating mundane and bureaucratic tasks or identifying things they might have missed. Plus, AI is supposed to meld into physicians' existing workflows not force them to materially change how they function each day. Sorry, but if your algorithms require a bunch of additional training...your AI sucks. It's just more crappy healthcare software. It's like buying a new car and then finding out it requires you to get a CDL (commercial drivers license) before you can actually drive it. Think of Hixny as an extension of your medical provider. Your doctors—including those in emergency room settings, urgent care centers and hospitals—have asked us to work on their behalf to help them get data from, and share your information with, other doctors you may see. This seamless exchange of health data empowers your providers to make the right decisions concerning your health. How Hixny works is best described with an example: Your primary care provider (PCP), who is connected to Hixny, sees you for a cough. They add notes about your visit to their electronic medical records (EMR) system. A month later, you visit urgent care with symptoms of a sinus infection. When the urgent care provider logs into their EMR system, the details from your PCP visit flow through Hixny from your PCP. The doctor at urgent care can now decide what tests to run and whether the cough and the sinus infection might be related.
