Insights from a recent fintech conference shed light on the Federal Reserve's approach to engaging nonbanks for the growth of FedNow. Mollie Markham, a specialist from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, emphasized the invaluable role of fintechs in shaping the future of real-time payments.   • Collaboration: Despite early limitations on direct access, collaboration between the Fed, fintechs, and core providers may be vital for FedNow's success. • Role of Fintechs: Responsible and compliant fintechs play a significant role in making FedNow more user-friendly and accessible and leveraging its data-rich capabilities. Any use of data should be carefully assessed and all relevant rules and regulations should be applied prior to use. • Core Providers' Importance: Core providers enable smaller banks to connect to FedNow, ensuring broader adoption among institutions of all sizes. Although enablement can be a good thing, the risk management and regulatory compliance expectations increase when small banks seek to use FedNow. • Continuous Learning: The Fed is still in the learning phase regarding FedNow's performance and volume as are the potential users of the system, indicating ongoing efforts to optimize the system. The Fed should seek operational insights from early adopters and incorporate dynamically. • Industry Participation: Industry stakeholders are invited to contribute to FedNow's expansion and identify volume opportunities for future growth.   These points highlight the collaborative efforts and ongoing development surrounding FedNow and its engagement with the fintech ecosystem. Any bank/fintech/FedNow collaboration will require close attention to the operating rules and expectations of the Fed. This research is crucial for understanding and improving impact measurement and management (IMM) within the CDFI industry. Key Findings: • Demand for CDFI products remains strong. • CDFIs largely met demand, but for some, their ability has been limited. • The biggest challenges to fully meeting demand varied across CDFIs. • CDFIs have continued to innovate to address these and other challenges.
