This recent piece by FSG argues that foundations committed to systems change need to take an ecosystem approach guided by the principles of trust based philanthropy to inform strategy development, program implementation, and learning and evaluation. This reorientation takes funders from positioning themselves as central to positioning themselves as one component of an ecosystem. This results in, among other things: Strategy development moving from being developed internally to being co-created with ecosystem partners; Strategy implementation expanding beyond siloed grantmaking for organizations to support for collaboratives and community-led solutions; and Learning and evaluation expanding beyond grant-level outcomes and accountability with proscribed outcomes to co-developing systems level outcomes and learning. The authors provide helpful examples and frameworks for each stage of the strategy lifecycle. For those of you who fund in systems change, what resonates with you?

Have you read Giving USA’s annual report on philanthropy yet? There are so many insights to discuss, but one theme stood out to me: hope for recovery. While inflation-adjusted giving was down about 2% in 2023, this decline is much smaller than the previous year. Nonprofits can best manage the current landscape by maintaining strong relationships with individual donors — a crucial and loyal segment — and focusing on unrestricted fundraising. #GivingUSA2024

Nonprofits operate in dynamic environments with evolving social issues and donor expectations. Effective leadership and a strong internal culture contribute to organizational resilience and sustainability. This is critical for nonprofits facing financial uncertainties or changes in funding landscapes, ensuring they can continue to serve their communities over the long term. So, what should you do within your own organization to make this a reality? ➡️ Establish clear goals. Diversify funding sources and develop contingency plans for financial sustainability. ➡️ Regularly communicate the organization's mission and values, and integrate it into team meetings and performance evaluations. ➡️ Encourage the formation of employee resource groups, conduct regular DEI training, and implement policies that promote equity. ➡️ Create open-door policies for feedback and suggestions - share organizational updates, successes, challenges, and decisions. ➡️ Allocate resources for pilot projects and innovative initiatives. Encourage cross-departmental collaboration and idea-sharing. Cultivating a strong culture in nonprofits is essential to uphold a mission-driven ethos - but also, an organization in general. Fundraising can be a lonely profession. You work tirelessly, in many cases alone, as you write proposals or work on funder cultivation emails. Interactions with others is either terse as you develop and finalize proposals, or caught up in self-esteem pitfalls, whether a donor will "choose" you or not. Even if you work with a team it can feel like you are all on your own in this experience of putting all you have into a written document that may or may not please a donor. It doesn't have to feel so lonely. In fact if we begin to pivot the way we look at fundraising, and really think about it as a relationship building exercise, than it should feel more invigorating and energy-producing, not energy sucking, given the opportunities you have to engage with and meet new partners! Fundraising can be about sharing your expertise, and finding a match where your expertise mixes well with others' need for insights, technical support and guidance. How can we re-position fundraising so it isn't so lonely? What tools do you use to stay ahead of this risk?
