On one of my first weeks at Xpedition I went down to LA to visit our set for our Fitbit client in the YouTube Playa Vista studios and it was impressive in size and scale to say the least. 100s of videos made in half a dozen languages in just a few weeks. What I found most impressive, though, was the vibe. Everyone was cheerful, chatty, sharing ideas, having fun, laughing often, music was going, and it felt like one big summer camp inclusive of clients, talent and the 100+ Xpedition crew. All the sets I’d been on before were serious, a top-down-direction approach. Only one person could talk to clients, only the director spoke on set. Talent were spoken at, and only a few people could share ideas. Most everyone was stiff as a board and, if I’m being honest, as a serious young professional out to prove herself I’m sure I contributed right into that tone on more than a few occasions. Imagine my surprise to see how Xpedition ran a soundstage! Vibe aside, the work was actually better. Issues were brought up, ideas came from many, clients raised ideas and concerns on the spot, the talent had a blast and their personalities shone through. The work could get done on time and on budget and people could have fun and contribute. We think all sets should be like this - for the benefit of the work and the people - so my lovely Xpedition colleagues have shared some of their tips for creating collaborative, inclusive sets. More budget. More resources. More three-martini lunches. But as tools and technologies are increasingly democratized, smaller teams are leveling the playing field. And brands are shifting dollars to engage more niche agencies who aren’t necessarily full-service, but fully capable of getting the job done. So while we don’t expect big agencies to go anywhere, when it comes to opportunities for the “little shop”, we suddenly see more.

The rate this is advancing is insane. The next leap forward for the industry since personal computers. The more and more fine grained control that’s built in to ai the more and more it will become a powerful tool in the storytelling toolbox.

This week, Volvo released a nearly 4-minute-long ad on Instagram shot by Cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema (Interstellar, Oppenheimer). Here’s the thing about storytelling in marketing: too often, brands want to cast themselves as heroes in every story. But here’s the truth: they’re not the hero. The customer is. Every customer is on their own journey, facing challenges, seeking solutions, and striving for something better. The brand’s role? This is yet another proof that AI is here to stay. Robert Zemeckis' latest feature film is at the same level of content quality as all his other movies but with the added exponential enhancement of storytelling and visual narrative through Generative AI. Training their models with factual actors' historical information delivers a de-ageing process like no other; Metaphysic.ai continues to break ground! I can't wait to see this film. Five years of growth, countless lessons—and a day that still starts and ends with family. 2024 is is shaping up to be another 35% YOY revenue growth for my studio. As 2025 approaches, I’ve been reflecting on what it took to build Destin Whales into a creative studio with 5+ years of consistent growth of 30-50%—all while navigating the joys (and chaos) of raising two young kids. If you think content inflation is a problem now with all these streamers producing more content than we can consume, imagine when creators no longer need to rely on big budgets and big studios to bring their ideas to life. Yes, Artificial Intelligence willl likely reduce the number of people needed to do anything, including movies and tv series. On the other hand, it will also allow a lot more of those to get their ideas off the ground. That may reshape the ecosystem, change the current notion of what a career is, or how one thinks of their specialty… it will be dramatically and unfortunately some people will have a rough time, but looking at the transformations only through its challenges may hold us from tackling the opportunities it also presents.
