When I edit any type of content, I'm looking at: ✍ Readability - Is it easy to understand? ✍ Connective tissue - Do you help readers connect the dots? Or do they need to do it on their own? ✍ Scannable - Can someone who scans the article get the gist and be persuaded to read it in full? These types of edits get overlooked far too often in favor of line edits. Yes, grammar and spelling are both important (and this type of edit has to happen, too), but if the article isn't written in a way that will engage the reader, why even write it? I love the way Tracey Wallace explained the different types of edits (and how to think about them) in her article "The 3 Types of Edits" on Workweek. Take a look and see what stands out to you. Strategic decision or proofreading accident? Some of the comments in my original post feel it's the former. Here's why I think it's the latter: 1. *It was spelled wrong deliberately.* In other ads, Naked has successfully used deliberate misspellings to great effect. The most immediate example is "Lose wait." This one = brilliant. It effectively uses a well-known phrase, while tackling a call-centre pain point. "Negotiantions"? Not so much, IMO. 2. *It's piggybacking on an inside joke.* Hmmmm. These are only funny if you're on the inside and 'get it'. If you're not, you could potentially be sharing it with a snarky comment about proofreading while rolling your eyes. If there's a joke attached to this, please put me in the loop, because I'm definitely on the outside with this one. 3. *It was done because they knew there would be a reaction and it would increase reach.* I can't argue with the reach part. This has definitely got people talking. (Mostly marketers and writers/editors, though, from the looks of it. LOL!) BUT... Despite Naked's playful brand persona, insurance is a pretty serious business. What does a nonsensical spelling (see point 1) say about the way their underwriting has been done? In a world where companies can be sued over a missing Oxford comma or misused apostrophe (see links in comments), is this not potentially damaging the brand (accidentally, if it was deliberate)? This is where my brain went immediately, but as a niched technical writer, I haven't done B2C marketing for ages. I'm genuinely interested to hear your take, especially if you think this is a deliberate strategic decision. Please educate me in the comments.

Canceling services and subscriptions can be a tremendous hassle. I could name a few brands that I really struggled to break ties with, and what I learned from those experiences is that when I finally make it out, those brands will never earn my business again. As a UX writer, I get it...we are beholden to the needs of the business, and of course, keeping paying customers is one of those needs. We are, however, also in the business of helping people (our users) and giving them a sense of control over what happens to them, and their money is always the right thing. Having trouble making an argument for why customers don't deserve to be stuck in endless doom loops? You could bring up trauma-informed design and make an entire case explaining how such a cancellation flow could be causing actual human beings who have already suffered additional trauma by stripping them of control. If a human-centric approach doesn't work (you should be alarmed 😱!), you can always appeal to the all-mighty dollar and find some places in the product where you're getting lots of help tickets or complaints and recommend some proactive improvements to the experience. Not only will they save on support costs, but also we all know, that happy customers don't leave or, at the very least, will certainly return when the need arises.
