Currently reading Sam Walton’s memoir, "Made in America," and I loved this quote from former Walmart CEO David Glass describing Walton. These qualities have become so important to embrace over the years. Running an agency, growing with the team, and refining how we serve clients is a constant process of trial, error, and adaptation. It means showing up every day with a mindset of improvement, trying new things, and having the courage to pivot when things don’t work out. Like Sam, I’ve learned that failure and being wrong are essential parts of growth. Without that mindset, missteps or feedback could hold you back from progress—and sometimes, you’re on the edge of something great. It’s about asking: What’s the takeaway? How can we do better? This past year has had its challenges, but it’s been full of reflection and refinement. I’ve spent more time in one-on-ones with the team, gathering feedback, and figuring out how we can improve for both clients and each other. We’re experimenting, making educated guesses, and adapting from missteps and surprises. I know not everything will go as planned, but staying flexible is key. It’s equally important to instill this mindset within the team to keep morale and momentum strong. Having a vision and setting goals is important, but loving the process and enjoying the journey is what makes it all worthwhile.

Shoutout to Alex Siminoff and the team at Parity, Inc. for letting us help bring their first video case study to life. 🎥 Explaining Parity is dead simple. Install IoT devices/sensors to maximize efficiency on big HVAC systems so you can: generate savings, reduce carbon emissions, monitor system health / humidity / temp, get ahead of problems before they start, all that. An extremely solid product and proposition. The building staff unanimously shared what a breeze installation was. It's extremely cool. ❄️🔥 My personal highlight: hearing Arnold, the buildings Assistant Super, talk about how he rests more / has more time knowing he’s not having to chase random bugs on a massive heating and cooling system. 💡The man gets some peace and the man deserves some peace!

How to be "great" via the joyfully creative, Grammy & Oscar winner, Jon Batiste, who says: "The measure of your greatness is the measure of your generosity." Based on Batiste's recent podcast/YouTube interview with Tim Ferris, here's a 3-step framework that explains how you can never be less than great ever again: • Step 1: Maintain Your Vessel Rather than "shoulds," Batiste calls self-care "maintenance." He emphasizes the importance of maintaining one's physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. He uses the analogy of a car on lease, suggesting that we are entrusted with caring for our bodies and minds. Most importantly, for Batiste, maintenance goes beyond simply fulfilling basic needs; it's about cultivating a "generous temple within" and living in a giving state. This involves finding ways to share our gifts and talents with others. • Step 2: Cultivate Inner Space For me, a highlight of the interview was the way that Batiste shared three powerful affirmative English "mantras" that anyone can use to uplift themselves. The first one was a song. The second two were based on his rendition of more traditional prayers: - "I feel good. I feel free. I feel fine just being me." - "Be still and know that I am God." - "Thy Will be done." Batiste said, "There has to be that space in you that you've saved that is the sacred space." • Step 3: Play! "Chaos asks questions of you order never will" The wonderful Colleen DeCourcy retells her experience working with Dan Wieden when she took over as Chief Creative Officer at Wieden+Kennedy Her immediate response to me asking about working with Dan was this quote about chaos. We have a natural reaction against chaos because it can be destructive and unsettling but what if we reframed it as a necessary condition for achieving something truly breakthrough 🌪 Chaos propels you forward while order maintains the status quo 🌪 Chaos creates leaders while order creates managers 🌪 Chaos demands a response while order delays it 🌪 Chaos reveals the cracks while order papers them up 🌪 Chaos forces ownership while order delegates it 🌪 Chaos fosters creativity while order fosters compliance 🌪 Chaos requires trust while order replaces it It got me thinking whether there is an optimal mix of Chaos and order required to achieve breakthrough ideas and momentum? We spend most of our time creating order but what if what we actually needed was an injection of chaos? I know I just posted our interview for The Imaginarium's State of the CMO Report, 2024 – but I also interviewed Noah Brier for a fun and hysterical look at #genai at Drew Neisser's fantastic Super Huddle, one of the most vibrant and exciting communities of #B2Bmarketing leaders. While we didn't have time to touch upon Brier's Hierarchy of Needs – we did get to some good stuff: - The importance of fingerspritzenfuhl in developing your own ability to use AI (basically how your fingers feel as you do the work). - The way this technology, Gen AI, works is counter-intuitive so you need to relearn how to build on it (hence the importance of fingersritzenfuhl) - The reality that the ability to confidently predict the impact of AI is inversely proportional to using is... aka. the more you understand the less you understand about where it's going. - The best way to get started is to take the things you do best, and use AI to make those things easier and faster. Netflix consider partnering with broadcast TV stations (both affiliates and O&Os). Let’s face it: traditional broadcast stations have been sidelined by streaming services, many of which are owned by the same companies that operate their affiliated networks. A partnership with Netflix could be a game-changer. Here’s why: 1. Live Sports Opportunities – Imagine major events (like a blockbuster fight or even NFL games) being simulcast on both Netflix and broadcast stations. The technology already exists to clear a “digi-channel” for authenticated Netflix subscribers. This approach would not only solve streaming capacity issues but also open doors for Next Gen TV integrations. 2. Ad-Supported Content – Broadcast stations gain access to Netflix’s massive library of ad-supported content, 3. Promotion for Netflix – leveraging the reach and credibility of local broadcast stations to sell subscriptions and spotlight their content. Such a collaboration would completely reshape ad sales dynamics. Netflix would gain credibility with national and local advertisers, while affiliates regain relevance with a steady pipeline of premium, ad-supported content.

We see a lot of media mix modeling RFPs here at Recast. Unfortunately, a lot of them put a ton of emphasis on things that don’t actually matter that much to rolling out a successful MMM practice. Every MMM RFP should focus on 3 things: • Verifiability of the model The first (and most important) thing that you should be thinking about is verifiability and how are you going to validate the results are actually correct. It is trivially easy to run “an MMM”, and it is very, very difficult to run a good one. You want to ask every vendor you meet how transparent are the results going to be and how –specifically– are you going to be able to verify and validate them. What you should look for here is a way to validate the vendor’s results outside of the model itself. • Model operations You also want to think about all the operational components of your MMM. Make sure you’re asking questions like: - What's the refresh cadence going to be? - How often are you actually going to be re-estimating the model and re-estimating all of the models' parameters, or are you just re-using stale parameters on fresh data? - What's the procedure for identifying when things have changed? Beware that a lot of MMM vendors use confusing terms here or have different types of refreshes that aren’t actually refreshers… put simply, you really want to be clear on exactly what's happening. • Usability of the results Here, you want to ask questions like: - How are we going to have access to the results of the model? Is it a PDF / powerpoint? What is available in the dashboard? - How will we actually use these results in our planning workflow? - What underlying data are you going to have access to? If you want to use MMM in a fast-paced, on-demand way, great usability is what unlocks it. If every time you want something you have to ask a support question and they have to ask their team in some foreign country to pull the data, it will slow you down a lot. Whether you use Recast or not, I highly recommend you ask all these questions in your MMM RFP. Now, question for you: would it be useful if we made a free MMM RFP template you could download?
