Dropping more findings today from our new 2024 Tidelift state of the open source maintainer report. You can read today’s post here: https://lnkd.in/gbhBsNCH or stay with me for the custom LinkedIn three pepper version 🌶🌶🌶 , where we attempt to answer what should be a very simple question: — Who’s paying the maintainers? 🤔 — If you were following along with my earlier posts, you’ll remember that 👉 no one 👈 is paying 60% of the maintainers (who describe themselves as unpaid hobbyists). But of the maintainers who are getting paid, what are the sources of their income? If you guessed “open source foundations," I have news for you. I asked my AI overlord 🤖 🖖 to give me a one sentence summary of why open source foundations exist, and here's what it told me: "Open source foundations exist to provide legal, organizational, and financial support for collaborative software development projects, ensuring their sustainability and promoting wider adoption." That financial support isn't making its way directly to the maintainers of the projects, though, because only 3% of paid maintainers report getting any income from foundations. We’ve asked about it in all three years we’ve done the survey and the percentage has stubbornly remained at 3% all three times. If you guessed “open source is a public good, like clean water or interstate highways, so governments must be paying maintainers,” again, sadly, nope ⛔ . Only 1% of paid maintainers receive direct payments or donations from government or other public entities. The number 1️⃣ source of maintainer income, reported by 25% of paid maintainers is donation programs like GitHub Sponsors. This percentage has risen consistently (from 16% in 2021 to 24% in 2023 before hitting 25% this year). The number 2️⃣ source of maintainer income is salary or wages from an employer where open source maintenance is an explicit part of the job responsibilities. 24% of paid maintainers report this income source, which has dropped slightly from 28% and 27% in previous surveys. The number 3️⃣ source of paid maintainer income is Tidelift, which has also risen to 19% from 16% and 15% in previous surveys. And I know what you are thinking, so if you want to stick an asterisk beside that because we hosted the survey, that’s fine, I get it, but you should also know that 70% of the survey respondents are *not* Tidelift maintainer partners (and that percentage has stayed pretty consistent with the previous surveys). As you review these findings, don’t lose sight of the fact that 👉 none of these sources of maintainer income are being reported by more than one quarter of paid maintainers 👈 . This is one of several warning signs you’ll find throughout this year’s report that show we have a lot of work to do to ensure the amazing open source maintainers we all depend on have the financial support they need to keep their projects healthy, safe, and secure. 📈
