Why I Believe in Shorter, Richer, Higher Quality Game Experiences If I were allowed to choose just one area to focus on in the gaming industry, aside from any organization I work for or am affiliated with, just based on my personal opinion, I would bet on shorter, richer, higher quality game experiences in the 5-20 hour or less time frame that people could really enjoy at a reasonable price. I say this with conviction based on a few things: 1. Corporate Constraints: This often doesn't happen within larger companies because getting such a project approved, even if it has an attractive ROI, is challenging. Internal hurdle rates and other competing interests require projects to bring in nominal values that are often too large for smaller projects to be of interest. 2. Gamer Fatigue: Based on data from informal polls within our community and statistics collected by others, gamers, even serious ones (myself included), are experiencing fatigue with their game libraries and the abundance of free-to-play titles. 3. Market Demand: When I asked how many titles people purchase, the range from core gamers is usually three to six titles a year, at max. Offering experiences in the $15 to $40 price range that can be completed quickly and have a clear endpoint could be more attractive in this context. 4. Investment Challenges: Having significant experience in actively playing games and having seen many helps in making the right investment decisions. Financial and strategic investors might be less versed in games, making their success in selections trickier. Matching investors with game developers is also challenging, as many developers seek big logos for prestige and future funding, which larger companies often can't provide due to internal thresholds. 5. Interest Trends: As shown in a recent analysis I presented here on the channel, it's not uncommon for two-thirds or more of the 85+ Metacritic-rated games to be independent, smaller, and shorter. This indicates significant interest in these types of games, even if they aren't always the biggest money-makers. The most challenging area, in my opinion, is larger live services games. The second most challenging area is true AAA productions, especially longer, epic, major time commitment AAA games. While there is certainly more select opportunity in the AAA space, the data suggests that success is quite concentrated in a very small number of players who have shown they can be successful again and again. In summary, if I were to make a selection, unaffiliated with any organization, that's where I would personally place my time and bets. I believe in the potential of these shorter, high-quality game experiences and the unique market opportunity they present. This approach also allows a wider range of developers to break through, as the data shows, offering diverse and innovative experiences that resonate with players.

Capcom has released a less-than-positive annual report. There's nothing critical in it; all the declines are tied to a pause in releases. Capcom certainly has a vast catalog of successful franchises for upcoming releases. Resident Evil (RE) stands out distinctly. While Capcom didn't start with RE, it played a crucial role in their history and has had a significant impact on the gaming industry as a whole. Today, RE comprises 32 releases across 33 platforms. These are incredible numbers and a testament to success. Moreover, judging by Metacritic scores, Capcom manages to maintain a high standard of quality. I gathered a timeline of all RE releases on one website (link in the comments). I thoroughly enjoyed watching videos, reading books, reminiscing about my own experiences playing the games, and playing with friends and colleagues. Here are a few interesting facts about RE and Capcom: - Resident Evil 4 was released on 14 platforms. - The first RE took 3 years to develop, instead of the usual 3-6 months for Capcom in 1996. Consultants hired from the U.S. advised shutting down the project when it was almost complete, predicting its failure. - Devil May Cry and Dino Crisis were born while searching for fresh gameplay for RE. - Capcom was one of the first companies to start paying revenue shares to developers, which is particularly noteworthy for Japanese companies. - Toy Story I and RE I were released around the same time. - For a while, music for RE was composed by a well-known Japanese composer who was said to be deaf. It later turned out that he wasn't actually deaf and didn't compose the music himself. PS. In 2026, the series will celebrate its 30th anniversary, and there will likely be a special release or edition. Or perhaps they'll simply release a version with full DualSense support.

Are gamers willing to pay $100 for 3 days of early access to a game? Over 2.2 million people were willing to pay the 60% higher price for College Football 2025 Kamila Gora, head of marketing and community with ZTX, said “I actually don't mind this. I think out of all the quote unquote extractionary accusatory systems that we've seen and are seeing, this is actually a really good compromise because to be frank, you're just extending the ability to the true fans to dive in earlier. I'm getting a finalized, polished product and I'm happy to jump in earlier, versus [beta] participation in unfinished testing which usually goes the other way around where people are sometimes incentivized. So I think this is fair.” Wills Spangler, who manages user acquisition at Stardust, stated that “releasing a game 3 days early is not innovation. That's not like a revolutionary thing that nobody's tried. The only reason it works is because not everybody does it and it's capitalizing on the market hype for these games. Where we want to see innovation is how funds from an event like this are actually benefiting the community and the people who built the game. I think that's where real innovation is, not in releasing it 3 days early.” What’s your opinion?

Inflation isn't just the cost of eggs. Frost Giant Studios, Inc. has raised ~$35 million dollars to make its upcoming RTS, Stormgate. So what does Frost Giant CEO Tim Morten tell GamesIndustry.Biz? "The reality is that big games that get made today are spending in excess of $100 million. So, for us to go up against AAA games, for us to be a game that really stands as the next-generation RTS of the coming years, it does require a lot of investment. We’ve raised just under $35 million to date — that’s a big number, but it’s a much smaller number than most AAA games actually deploy against building their products. And we are really fortunate to be in a position that we got the funding that we need to get to our early access launch, but we want to launch strongly, and we want to launch in a way that puts us at the same level as AAA games from other publishers." This is such an important statement for players, investors and yes, all of us in the #videogameindustry to really truly understand. There's been a lot inflation in #gamedevelopment and when you couple that with the increased interest rates in the macro economy (which he also mentions in the interview), it creates a very challenging environment to make new games and for #gamepublishing to successfully launch them. Sharing ownership with your fanbase sounds chaotic but makes a lot of sense to me when you're making a game in a genre that has lost its appeal to most massive game publishers. What's the biggest delusion in game dev? I see it all the time. You think you know what players want. YOU DO NOT! 🚫 And that’s where everything falls apart. Mistake №1 ↳ Relying on your past success. • What worked then won’t work now. • Players evolve, so should your approach. Mistake №2  ↳ Trusting your brand will keep you safe. • Players aren’t loyal to brands. • They’re loyal to experiences. Mistake №3  ↳ Overhyping your game pre-launch. • Hype without substance kills trust. • Deliver first, market later. Mistake №4  ↳ Ignoring your scope creep. • Bigger doesn’t mean better. • Keep it tight, keep it focused. Mistake №5 ↳ Blind faith in your Free-to-Play model. • F2P isn’t for every game. • Know your audience. ✅ Solution? Stop assuming you know what players want. Start listening. Test → Adapt → Evolve. What kind of leader will you be? As I reflect on my 1st year anniversary of joining Midwest Games and agreeing to partner with Ben Kvalo to help lead this fledgling startup, I must first consider the context of the tumultuous year+ that the games industry continues to go through. As I have seen throughout my career, so much of the cause of this upheaval has been due to poor leadership or poor judgement, planning, and decision-making by company leadership. I'd like to offer this call to action, especially to those newer to this industry experiencing such upheaval for the first time: Don't wait for someone else - you *can* change this pattern. If you're feeling angry, despondent, or helpless, turn that energy into your own motivation to be the leader that you'd like to see. After experiencing multiple layoffs that I felt were due to poor decisions made by company leadership, I realized I couldn't wait around for the "powers that be" to wise up - they are normal people susceptible to the same greed, pettiness, politics, biases, and egos that anyone else is, it's just amplified as many have gotten into positions of power in spite of themselves. I've seen this situation fall apart so many times firsthand I can't even count them. I wanted to do better - I spent years reading, learning, and analyzing both myself and other leaders, trying to better understand the values and skills that would lead to sustainable success. How would I do things differently? What kind of leader do I want to be? The lessons are out there, and they do make a difference. So I encourage you to learn. Read. Get mentorship. Write out your values. Lead from where you are. Even small shifts and advocating for change from within can cause ripple effects beyond what you may even consider. Your chance to make a difference will likely come sooner than you think and it's never too early (or too late) to improve your leadership skills.

What to do if your game has low retention? I teamed up with Mykola Veremiev to make a decision tree for your game. If your game is struggling, ask these questions:  1. Is the FTUE completion rate high?   2. Are players engaged with the core loop?   3. Are paywalls causing drop-offs?   4. Are there difficulty spikes?   5. Is the player funnel strong?   6. Is the game technically stable?   7. Do players have clear long-term goals?   8. Are players pursuing those goals?   9. Is feedback on gameplay positive?   10. Does your team still believe in the vision?  Depending on the answers, you have 3 paths:  • 🔁 Iterate: Minor fixes can boost retention.   • ↩ Pivot: Core gameplay has potential but lacks depth.   • ☠ Kill: Systemic issues with no clear solution.  Use data to guide your decisions. This was reported by Daniel Wu, one of the founders of Hero Games, the largest shareholder of the game's developers. According to him, the game's development cost $70 million and took 6 years. ◾️Street Fighter 6 sales reached 4 million copies across all platforms. The total sales of the series as of the end of the first half of 2024 stand at 55 million. ◾️Sales of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 are approaching 3 million copies, earning more than all other Warhammer universe games combined in 2023. ◾️Harrison Froschke, Senior Product Manager at Blizzard Entertainment, revealed on his LinkedIn the revenue of Diablo IV. The game has surpassed $1 billion in earnings, with $150 million coming from microtransactions. Blizzard had officially reported that the game earned $666 million in its first 5 days of sales. ◾️More than 1 million people have played Citizen Sleeper. The studio and publisher (Fellow Traveller) proudly shared this on their social media. ◾️Released on August 15, shapez 2 has already sold 260,000 copies. In the first week, the game was purchased 70,500 times. It launched with 330,000 wishlist entries. ◾️Earth Defence Force 6, released in September 2022, has sold 550,000 copies in two years. 📱Mobile games ◾️According to Appfigures, the gross revenue of Royal Match has reached $3 billion. The previous billion was achieved in January this year, and the game has surpassed 300 million downloads. ◾️Sensor Tower reports that The Last War: Survival has earned over $900 million since its release. 30.4% of that amount came from the US, 22.9% from South Korea, and 12.4% from Japan. The RPD (revenue per download) in South Korea is $53, the highest among all countries. Additionally, The Last War: Survival accounts for 30% of the revenue from strategy games in South Korea. ◾️In its first year, Monster Hunter Now has earned over $225 million, according to data from AppMagic. ◾️Trivia Crack by Etermax has been downloaded more than 800 million times. It took 11 years to reach this milestone. ◾️Using AppMagic, mobilegamer.biz found that games from Netflix Games have been downloaded more than 210 million times. The leader is GTA: San Andreas with 25.2 million downloads. ◾️Infinity Nikki by Infold Games has surpassed 14 million pre-registrations. 💡 ERROR LOG #13: Feedback is essential - part 1 out of 2. I focus here on the creative side of it and the next one will be focused around performance. I believe all of you can agree with this statement, right? It also sounds simple as hell. I’m sure you’ve read tons of articles about it and heard so many stories regarding it. Cool, so here is my take on it :D. Fun fact is that it sounded obvious to me 20 years ago and today I believe it’s exactly opposite. Giving or getting feedback is complex and it is an art. It’s very tough and it requires a lot of courage to be able to deal with it sometimes. Long story short 20 years ago I thought I knew and I was wrong. I failed so many times by not being mature enough to get feedback that you have no idea. Of course there is a second side of this coin, sometimes I was getting feedback in a very unprofessional way. What is really important is to have a common understanding in a team that feedback is essential, it’s a crucial part of the process, not an extra tool, it’s a foundation in healthy teams. The more trust you have in your team the better it is to take it, but it’s worth remembering that feedback is one of the tools to build trust, so it requires an open mind to take it and skill to provide it. The most common mistake is that people give feedback in a very judgemental way which sounds pretty negative and believe me, in the current world it’s really easy to have an opinion on every subject. If you criticise what you see and on top of that you can’t build up your statement properly your feedback most probably won’t work. It can by it won’t be taken fully with a proper understanding and engagement and you don’t want that, trust me. If you give feedback starting from your need and feeling it is a completely different story from the get go. What do I mean by that? We deliver experiences in games, movies but also softwares. We build expectations with almost every action. It means that anything you do in collaborative work has a common denominator, always. Let’s use an example from the game industry. You have a team that builds a feature, all disciplines are involved you can imagine. There is always a context (at least should be) behind each feature. Ask yourself these questions: ❓ What is the fantasy behind it? ❓ What do you want a Player to feel? ❓ How do you want to motivate a Player to use it? These questions are not only referring to the core of it, these questions are common for all disciplines and everyone can ask them, starting from peers and ending on director level. This is a natural way for aligning people between all disciplines and ranks and as you see, these are questions and not judgemental statements. This difference is a key. 📘 "Radical Candor" by Kim Scott is a really great book I recommend regarding the art of giving/getting feedback. Don't hesitate to comment and share your thoughts please.
