What's happening: PepsiCo has announced its acquisition of Mexican-American food company Siete Foods for $1.2 billion, marking its first food purchase in about five years. As part of its strategy to diversify into healthier options, PepsiCo has been actively acquiring brands that align with this focus, including Bare Snacks and Health Warrior. Founded in 2014 by Veronica Garza, Siete Foods initially gained popularity for its grain-free tortillas and has since expanded to include a variety of products like tortilla chips, taco shells, salsas, and seasonings tailored for various dietary needs. These products are available at major retailers such as Target and Whole Foods. Pepsi CEO Ramon Laguarta expressed enthusiasm about enhancing the company’s multicultural portfolio with Siete’s offerings. After the sales of 4 Craft breweries to Tilray a few months ago, Molson Coors just acquired Cruz Blanca, a Mexican-Inspired craft brewery in Chicago. It will complement the other Mexican brands in their portfolio, Sol and Topo Chico With 20% of the US population being hispanic, the memo is clear for brewers: Constellation owns the Modelo portfolio (Corona, Modelo, Victoria,...) and the #1 beer brand (in value) in US aka Modelo Especial. AB had to sell the Modelo portfolio to Constellation in 2013 and launched a new Mexican beer in 2016, Estrella Jalisco. They also stepped up their game in the Bud Light Chelada space. Heineken leverages XX and Tecate with more cheladas and salty beers. What's next ? More Mexican imports or Mexican-inspired-US-Brewed products? More agave, tequila, cactus fruit flavors ? Other demographics ? Or a US brand that is more inclusive ? It's going to be interesting to see how the announced 25% tariffs on Mexican import are going to play here!

The #coffee prosumer market is evolving. "#Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world. In fact, in the National Coffee Association USA’s most recent 2024 National Coffee Data Trends report, 67% of US adults said they drank coffee the previous day – marking a 20-year high for #coffeeconsumption in the country. The report also found that US specialty coffee consumption was up by 7.5% on the previous year, with #espresso-based drinks leading the trend. So as the global specialty coffee market grows, so too does consumer knowledge and interest – especially alongside a huge focus on #consumereducation following the pandemic." I sat in on the SPINS webinar yesterday going over their new report, CPG Disruption in 2024. For many reasons, I started Mesa de Vida to share the cooking sauces I had been custom-blending for my pro-athlete clients. Still, the kicker that made me turn them into a business was realizing the big blue ocean of opportunity within the sleepy, boring, and/or copy-cat-laden center-store convenient meal prep solution categories. And, as a consumer, I couldn't find solutions that fit my, my family's, or my client's health needs. (Packaged in glass, no oils, no sugar, no gums or thickeners, low sodium, etc.) It's wonderful to see the the SPINS data showing that globally inspired, premium, health-focused innovations (like Mesa de Vida's offerings now and planned for the future) are really moving the needle and bringing much-needed innovation into the space. Florida, you've been served! In June, UPSIDE Foods held the first free and open to the public cultivated meat pop-up in Miami, serving our cultivated chicken to over 100 Floridians. Today, with the Institute for Justice, UPSIDE Foods announced that we have filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida, argues that Florida’s ban on #cultivatedmeat violates the Constitution’s provisions that prohibit protectionist measures designed to favor in-state businesses at the expense of out-of-state competitors and is preempted by Federal law. Soon we will be filing a motion for preliminary injunction to ensure that we can continue to sell our products while the lawsuit moves forward. Florida's law is a transparent example of economic protectionism. It was passed following intense lobbying by cattle interests, and its protectionist purpose was no secret. Indeed, the Florida Secretary of Agriculture openly praised the law at its signing ceremony for protecting in state agricultural interests from out of state competition, but protecting favored in state interest from out of state, which is not a legitimate use of government power. At UPSIDE, we believe that cultivated meat is a compliment, not competition, to conventional animal agriculture. With demand for meat expected to double and because the way we produce meat today is unsustainable we will need other methods to put choice on the table and ensure resilient supply chains. Today, I made our first step toward getting Currently carried by 23 locations of Whole Foods Market in Florida. The process is a bit convoluted (as I'm learning many things are in wine...), but here's generally what's going to happen: -We're already an approved vendor and need to update our new Currently Wine Co. Sauvignon Blanc into the Amazon vendor portal, which I did today -This process is now vendor-led, instead of distributor led, which ensures the accuracy of the information (since I won't mess it up but distributors might) -Next steps will be to schedule meetings in October with each store manager, who my Florida distributor has relationships with and update them on our new packaging, design and brand. -Because our story has continuity around environmental cause and goes farther now with being 2x lower carbon footprint and Certified Sustainable grapes, I'm hoping that will be a differentiator -There are in-store display opportunities, and I'm going to work on having our wine setup next to the oysters and seafood.
