Industry Insider – California hosted a fantastic event with CDPH and their IT leadership. If you are not a member, you should join. Not only do you get access to a broad cross section of the tech community, but you also get to hear directly from agencies. Here are four take aways I shared with our team. IT decision making involves policy and program people not simply IT leadership. They participate and inform the process, but they are not the sole decision-makers. They have a very pro-Microsoft disposition. Their history of AD Hoc, program driven technology spend means their technology stack is very complicated. They view building on a Microsoft platform as a major driver of efficiency and cost savings. Their technology budgeting process is changing which offers opportunities to capture larger sales across program areas in the future. CDPH has massive privacy and security concerns they need help addressing.

Santana Row shopping center in San Jose has implemented a ticketless parking system that eliminates the need for drivers to take a ticket upon entry and pay at a pay station upon exit. Instead, drivers can simply scan a QR code (see photo) posted throughout the garage using their phones, enter their license plate number and credit card information on the website that pops up, and a camera will read their license plate and open the gate as they exit. While this system may seem convenient and efficient, I think there is a significant security concern! There is a risk that perpetrators could replace the posted QR code with their own, which would redirect drivers to a fake website where they would unknowingly enter their credit card information. This could lead to unauthorized charges and potential identity theft. It is crucial for the shopping center to address this security concern by taking appropriate measures to protect drivers' personal and financial information. They must ensure that the QR codes posted are authentic and that there are no vulnerabilities that could allow perpetrators to manipulate the system. As an alternative solution, pay stations could be installed for shoppers to use instead of relying on their own phones.

Let me paint you a picture: 6:00 AM: Wake up to my smart alarm clock that now critiques my sleep quality. I didn’t know my pillow was a productivity expert. 7:15 AM: My inbox: 37 emails about AI integration. I’m considering installing a chatbot to handle my chatbot inquiries. 🤖 10:30 AM: Meeting with General Managers and Product Managers from our 14 B2B SaaS businesses. Topics? AI, AI, and more AI. I’m starting to wonder if “AI” is a secret code for “Can we discuss AI again?” 12:00 PM: Lunch with investors. They want to know how AI is transforming our portfolio. I’m now fluent in “AI-speak” and have started speaking in acronyms. I’m pretty sure they think “GPT” stands for “Get Pizza Today.” 2:30 PM: A call with John Austin, Amanda McKay BA, CPHR, Kit Dean, and our AI platform integration team. We’re now using AI to optimize our AI use cases. I asked if we could use AI to predict when I’ll finally understand AI. They said I'm still in beta. 5:30 PM: Wrap up the day by asking my AI assistant to draft this LinkedIn post and share it on LinkedIn. It responded, “I’m still learning humor.” Great, even my AI needs a little more training. 😅 In all seriousness, I’m absolutely thrilled about how AI is enhancing our businesses. The innovation is incredible, and our teams are doing amazing things. But sometimes, it’s nice to just take a step back and laugh about all the chat on AI ...
