🚀 Rive has the potential to lift interactions in eLearning to a new level, but where do you start with learning how to use it? For those of you who don’t know, Rive is a design and animation tool for creating interactive assets. Let's see whats next: 🎯 1. Get Rive. Don’t worry; the first three animations are on the house. You can find it easily with a Google search. 🎓 2. Time to learn I taught myself to a certain point with the Rive 101 video playlist on their YouTube channel. (Full disclosure: I had some animation experience with After Effects, so some concepts were a bit easier for me to take in. Most beginners should be able to work through it). This gave me a baseline of skills, but I wanted to dive deeper and felt a structured course would benefit me, which is where Motion Design School comes in. Ive been trying out the first lesson of their Rive course today (for free, no less! Just create an account, I'll pop the link in the comments), and Ive learned loads more already. Check out the video attached to this post. 🎨 3. Get your creations into your eLearning There’s a few ways to do that, but Ive been using Kwantic.co to build courses with my Rive animations (check out my other posts to see one in action!) You can just drop your Rive files straight in there as an interaction, no coding is needed to make them work! (Kwantic also has 3 free projects and some cool AI tools, so give it a go!) Starting Strong: Why the 'Check-In' Matters in Group Facilitation Facilitators often kick off sessions with a "check-in," a practice that might sometimes cause an eye-roll but more frequently energises the group and fosters connection. Here are five key reasons we consistently use check-ins when facilitating: Setting the Tone for a Different Kind of Gathering: A check-in immediately signals that this isn’t your typical meeting. It helps participants shift out of their usual group dynamics and into a more focused, engaged mindset. We often notice people putting down their phones and adopting a more attentive posture once the check-in begins, indicating they’re ready to engage fully. Encouraging Early Participation: In our experience, getting everyone involved early on can lead to a more balanced discussion throughout the event. When everyone contributes from the start, it reduces the likelihood of dominant voices overshadowing quieter participants, encouraging more inclusive participation. Gaining Insight as a Facilitator: Check-ins can be a valuable tool for gauging the group’s mood and expectations. By asking participants to share how they’re feeling or what they hope to achieve, you can tailor the session to better meet the group’s needs. It also fosters a shared understanding among participants, aligning everyone from the outset. Fostering Group Connection: Whether the group is newly formed or reuniting after a while, a check-in helps build or renew relationships. It’s a powerful way to create a sense of community and collaboration within the group. The Power of ‘Parking’: Facilitators often use “parking” during a check-in to allow participants to share any potential distractions upfront—like expecting an urgent call or having unstable Wi-Fi. I have always found so much overlap between the world of eLearning design and presentation design. Take, for example, this tip video from Nolan Haims, Presentation and Data Storytelling Trainer about highlighting slide text. In it, he shares how a few thoughtful layout tweaks can make the highlighted information easier to scan and understand. It's a smart way to think about slide design. And this approach could work equally well for text on eLearning screens too. Over the past few years, I’ve gotten several questions about nonbinary pronouns and gender diversity in scenarios. Sometimes, people ask about using “gender neutral” characters in scenarios as a way to avoid stereotypes. I think that often comes from a place of good intent, but it creates a new set of problems. Instead of making every character nonbinary, it's more inclusive to create some nonbinary characters, along with male and female characters.
