I recently had the privilege of attending HLTH Inc. 2024, and I wanted to highlight an insightful article by Heather Landi, Paige Minemyer, Anastassia Gliadkovskaya, and Emma Beavins from Fierce Healthcare. The team did an excellent job capturing the notable trends and executive takeaways from the conference. While AI and its exciting opportunities were the dominant topics of conversation, the industry also recognized the importance of addressing foundational issues to enable effective and reliable implementation. This balance is crucial for driving meaningful innovation in healthcare. One of the standout moments for me was Providence Health Plan’s presence at the conference, particularly our CEO Don Antonucci panel with the Oregon Health Authorities Dr. Hathi. Their discussion underscored our commitment to joining leaders in the industry to push healthcare forward. It was inspiring to see the collaborative spirit and shared vision for the future of healthcare. Additionally, the article provided valuable takeaways from executives and experts about their favorite experiences at the conference, key topics they discussed, and how HLTH 2024 set the stage for future healthcare innovation. It is incredibly cleat to me that Health Equity is an area that all companies are thinking about, across the different sectors in Healthcare. I am excited to see how as we move forward, working together we are going to help those that need it the most! I've enjoyed seeing everyone's reflections on this year's HLTH USA and wanted to share some of my own. First off, big shout out to my co-panelists William Porteous Elizabeth Mitchell Laura (Gilligan) Walmsley and moderator Christina Farr for a really great discussion on the high bar for selling to employers today.   Beyond the panel, here are a few of my top takeaways:   - Employers are becoming more prescriptive when it comes to employee health. We’ve been seeing it, but it was clear our colleagues across the industry are seeing it, too. Employers are narrowing options for employees as a way of driving down costs. It’s a huge opportunity for those of us who can help them on this while still delivering on outcomes and experience.   - The rate of cost increases for specialty care is at the top of priority lists for employers. Arundhati Parmar and I discussed how unsustainably high costs are impacting access to care at every level, particularly for specialty care. The issues remain the same – MSK, weight management, and cancer – so solutions stand out through their efficacy.   - In healthcare, we need to be bold and focused. My main takeaway from the conference was: there’s a lot of noise out there. Zeroing in on high cost, high acuity moments is an effective route to cutting back on costs while maintaining high-quality care; it’s one dimension where we can truly make a significant difference for both employers and employees.   Curious to hear what others think!

Our latest case study, in partnership with The Villages Health System, LLC showcases how health systems can effectively engage their patients and identify behavioral health risks in Medicare populations. The Villages Health already established a hugely successful collaborative care program, known as Tandem Care, which increased behavioral health access and lowered total costs by 39%. With NeuroFlow, The Villages was able to scale the impact of this program by systematically identifying those in need of behavioral health support and improving care coordination. In one cohort, the health system identified that 24% of patients, who were not previously enrolled in Tandem Care, had behavioral health needs and would benefit from this program. #InTheNews At HLTH USA recently, Carrum stood out amongst scores of digital health companies, thanks to our single-minded focus on lowering the cost of specialty care while improving quality. Carrum Founder and CEO Sach Jain spoke with Arundhati Parmar, Editor-in-Chief of MedCity News, about launching value-based substance use treatment — and how we’re doing it differently. “The area of substance use is full of fraud and abuse because 1), there are organizations that are not well set up, but it’s an episode that pays a lot of money and whether the member is actually getting better or not, they are discharged, and after a few days, weeks they come back and then you do the whole thing all over again,” Jain charged. “So this is called washing machine model — wash and repeat — and then you keep on making money on the same patient. Picture a healthcare solution that positively impacts both employer savings and employee well-being. In my years of consulting, I’ve not seen many accomplish both—one often comes at a cost to the other. Narrow networks and care nav make operational sense but fail to engage employees, leaving employers to cost-shift. This negatively impacts the employee every time. Interesting conversation coming out of Fierce Healthcare Payor Summit last month. Agreed that we need to simplify transactional aspects of primary care delivery to create flexibility in impacting cost of care. TCOC VBC models will move the needle on affordability of care for all in the end. Yet, not every primary care provider and their teams are ready. Many primary care practices - while they believe in TCOC in concept - don't have the staff capacity, appetite, or infrastructure to engage. One way forward from this evolving dynamic is timely, granular incentives. “One thing that jumped out at me at HLTH was the level of collaboration and partnership,” said Kim Perry, emtelligent’s Chief Growth Officer. “Attendees, often in competitive spaces, came together with a common goal of improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.
