Can Mental Health Apps Be Effective for Depression, Anxiety, and Stress During a Pandemic?
American Psychological Association
Covid-19 is poised to exacerbate the global mental health crisis as social isolation, unemployment, and economic recession are risk factors for negative mental health consequences. Since the need for social distancing can make face-to-face services less accessible, people may turn to mental health apps as an accessible and inexpensive solution. But are the claims about the efficacy of these apps supported by evidence? We identified 19 published articles on PubMed of peer-reviewed randomized…
We identified 19 published articles on PubMed of peer-reviewed randomized clinical trials of mental health apps focused on stress, anxiety, and depression. Despite some evidence for the effectiveness of mental health apps, it remains unclear how effective these apps are compared to standard of care. Populations studied so far also lack diversity, making it difficult to generalize any benefits to racial minorities and low-income individuals—the very people who have been most negatively impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and traditionally have higher barriers to mental health services. While apps are not a substitute for face-to-face therapy, further evidence is warranted given their potential for delivering scalable, low-cost care to patients. We call for regulatory oversight as a means to ensure mental health apps demonstrate safety and effectiveness prior to marketing.

Travel ICU Nurse Concerns Across Covid-19 Hot Spots
New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst
As the most severe patients present with cardio-pulmonary distress and failure due to SARS-CoV-2, health care facilities have been forced to expand intensive care unit (ICU) capacity. Due to high demand, facilities have been turning to the contingent staffing workforce to access critical care nurses. As Covid-19 hot spots shift, demand for travel ICU nurses within those hot spots increases sharply. Given the transient nature of this workforce, ICU travel nurses may be at heightened risk of…

Due to high demand, facilities have been turning to the contingent staffing workforce to access critical care nurses. As Covid-19 hot spots shift, demand for travel ICU nurses within those hot spots increases sharply. Given the transient nature of this workforce, ICU travel nurses may be at heightened risk of infection and burnout while representing a crucial resource in the prolonged national Covid-19 response. Supplying adequate PPE and providing mental health support is essential to a long-term response.

High-Risk Care Coordination: Opportunities, Barriers, and Innovative Initiatives in Medicaid
Institute for Medicaid Innovation
As of 2015, approximately half of U.S. adults (those over age 21) suffer from one
chronic condition, and 25 percent have multiple chronic conditions.1
Persons with disabilities and multiple chronic conditions are often at higher risk for increased
utilization of health services and poorer general health status. Individuals with chronic

Persons with disabilities and multiple chronic conditions are often at higher risk for increased
utilization of health services and poorer general health status. Individuals with chronic
conditions often receive care from multiple clinicians in disparate healthcare settings.
Lack of communication between clinicians can result in inadequate, unnecessary, and
duplicative care.2 High-risk care coordination (also referred to as care management
and case management) is a strategy that has been used to improve quality of care,
safety, and outcomes. Care coordination can minimize gaps in care for high-risk
members through effective use of evidence-based services and supports. This report
details the ways in which the Medicaid population benefits from care coordination
programs and offers case studies from Medicaid health plans demonstrating
their efforts. Key components of care coordination programs, common payment
mechanisms, and potential barriers to successful implementation are provided along
with clinical, research, and policy opportunities that could improve the quality of and
access to care coordination services. -
Social Needs Data in the State Medicaid Enrollment Form: A Content Analysis

has the potential to expedite the coordination of needed services and

found that states varied in the type and number of specific social needs
data collected. Furthermore, it is unknown whether these data are being

Medicaid ACO, Information Systems, and Transitioning from Reactive to Proactive Care
Georgetown University Library
A thesis document built upon research into Medicaid 1115 waivers and their innovative payment and delivery structures. The document focuses on the use of three major characteristics of policy reform that may enhance the coordination of care for high-risk patients that contribute to higher healthcare costs.
