How do we solve health inequity? It's a question that we've been asking ourselves in the healthcare industry for years, but there has never been one clear answer. Until now? AI is a promising solution for many of the challenges posed by health inequity. As this article describes, AI has enhanced analytic abilities to identify at-risk patients, overcome communication barriers, addressing differences in access to resources, reducing the impact of human bias, and increasing diversity in clinical trials. However, as this article also critically points out, in its current state AI in healthcare isn't powerful enough. Implementing these large-scale systems takes resources that many hospitals simply don't have. As a result, not everyone is able to access powerful AI for health equity, especially communities who are already under sourced in terms of health services. How do we bridge this gap? We need targeted funding and support for AI equity programs in healthcare around the nation. Whether it's by financially incentivizing investment, nonprofit support, or through individual donors, bringing AI to the masses is an essential first step to assessing its potential when it comes to health equity. Healthcare systems are increasingly using AI driven care to solve their clinical care needs-- my latest for Forbes I specifically look at Hackensack Meridian Health's launch of AI driven care in partnership with KHealth. I also discuss the growing challenges of primary care and how AI may potentially help mitigate some obstacles. Other key entrants into the primary care market, including CVS MinuteClinic and Walgreens's VillageMD, have faced challenges in recent years. Needless to say, there is still a lot of work to be done in this space. But the tech may (one-day) be a promising means to help alleviate some key burdens in the industry. The Importance of Building Innovation Skills in Healthcare In healthcare, understanding and developing innovation skills gives executives and professionals a key advantage in driving sustainable change. New methods are critical whether governing or driving impactful initiatives. I learned this the hard way many years ago. As the Head of Strategy, I led a sizable 6+ figure initiative but we lacked the necessary innovation skills. Despite my expertise in the area, old methods failed, resulting in returning most of the budget. Later, I realised innovation required new approaches and enrolled in a design thinking course, which provided crucial insights. Now having a Post Grad in Innovation and Design Thinking and consulted across many organisations, My favoured Effective Innovation Approaches: 1. Design Thinking: A human-centered approach combining creative and analytical thinking to solve problems and create solutions. 2. Jobs to Be Done (JTBD): Focuses on understanding customer needs to design products and services which helps progress in the job to be done. 3. Systematic Inventive Thinking (SIT): Innovates by applying specific patterns to current processes within constraints. There is no single tool for every job; often, these approaches work best in combination. For instance, consider a hospital struggling with high readmission rates. Using design thinking, you could re-evaluate the discharge process. Apply the JTBD approach to understand what patients are trying to achieve post-discharge, such as managing medication accurately or accessing follow-up care. Meanwhile, use SIT skills to innovate within the constraints of existing resources; you might simplify follow-up procedures or establish new communication channels to ensure patients receive timely support. Building innovation skills is crucial for effective leadership in healthcare. By continuously developing these skills, you can lead impactful healthcare initiatives. RUN, DON'T WALK to read the latest CMMI evaluation report for the Accountable Health Communities (AHC) Model. This marks a significant milestone in advancing our understanding of how addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) impacts healthcare outcomes and costs. The AHC Model not only screened over 1.1 million beneficiaries, but also demonstrated that connecting individuals to critical community services can meaningfully reduce hospitalizations and healthcare expenditures. Key Findings: The AHC Model showed statistically significant reductions in ED visits, inpatient hospitalizations and total healthcare expenditures, particularly for underserved populations. The details are nuanced, as the results varied across subpopulations and health-related social needs, highlighting the complexity of integrating community resources with healthcare systems. To fully grasp the richness of the findings, I encourage you to dig into the report. Why This Matters: - For Patients: The model showed that addressing basic needs like food insecurity, housing instability, and transportation barriers doesn’t just improve quality of life, it also reduces stressors that impact overall health. - For Policymakers: These results highlight the fiscal responsibility of addressing SDOH. A Republican administration, for instance, might champion the cost savings and reduced hospital utilization, while all sides can appreciate the measurable health improvements for vulnerable populations. - For Health Equity: The model especially benefited underserved populations. Black and Hispanic beneficiaries were more likely to accept navigation services and resolve needs, reducing disparities in health outcomes. A Heartfelt Thank You: When Darshak Sanghavi and Dawn Alley hired me to work on this model, I knew it was important work, but I had no idea the system-wide transformation it would inspire. I remain in awe of the incredible dedication of the bridge organizations, navigators, community partners, and CMS staff who sacrificed long nights, weekends, and holidays (IYKYK) to bring this vision to life. I’m honored to have been part of that team that collaboratively designed and implemented this model, and grateful to have led it. I guess what I'm trying to say in too many words is that as with many things in life, none of this would have been possible without a village. As an aside, I found the comment from one individual about how he likes turnover because then you get the Diamonds in the Rough, intriguing. You could be throwing out the grain with the chaff. I do feel that the communication piece is essential, but do we have to elevate this to some kind of level of innovation, when it is so basic? What we need in home health care is resources, better pay, a career ladder, better education that focuses on psychoeducation, not training, and better integration among hospital, home health, public health, community services and employment, government and education if we are going to get anywhere in advancing real solutions. Maybe AI can work on that? Sometimes it seems that we are more willing to listen to a robot than to a human being. AI could be helpful with communication and integration. Actually, I think any computer program could probably be beneficial in reducing fragmentation, and I'm not even sure what it is that AI is adding other than perhaps some robotic features? I'm sure it has its place in gaming and communication, and I'm not against it. If AI in some way makes it easier to communicate and integrate then I'm all for it, but somehow I think it comes down to leadership and engagement which need to be prioritized.
