Improving healthcare outcomes starts with understanding and addressing the unique needs of the communities we serve. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) like AltaMed Health Services play a crucial role in serving some of the most underserved, under-resourced, and vulnerable communities in our state and across the country. Our communities are among the fastest-growing ethnic and racial categories in the US, experiencing significant changes in their countries of origin and preferred ethnic identities. These changes necessitate new methods for inclusion and a deeper understanding of the healthcare needs of these emerging population groups. Understanding language and cultural concordance is essential to improving healthcare outcomes. When healthcare providers can effectively communicate and resonate with the cultural values of their patients, the quality of care and patient satisfaction significantly increase. If we do not know and understand these cultural nuances, we cannot move the needle on health equity and access. Join us for a webinar that will shed light on how new federal diversity data collection standards will enhance access to healthcare. This initiative is not just about collecting data; it's about using that data to build bridges and improve the health outcomes of diverse populations. 🏥🔍 Please follow the link for registration: https://bit.ly/datadisagg The My Vote. My Health.™ campaign was established to empower the diverse Latinx communities we serve in our clinics and surrounding neighborhoods. By engaging our partners and community members in education and action, we build support for solutions to long-standing health inequities. Join Gloria Itzel Montiel, Dr. Seciah Aquino, Esteban Camarena and Ilan Shapiro MD MBA FAAP FACHE for this presentation. Together, we can create a healthier and more inclusive future for all. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: 𝗘𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀 Many MHA, MPH and MBA students are in the midst of interviewing for highly competitive administrative fellowships. As an interviewer for MultiCare Health System’s administrative fellowship program for almost a decade, I thought I’ll share some essential key tips to help all the candidates out there: 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗪𝗵𝘆: Reflect and articulate clearly why you think an administrative fellowship is the next step for you in your career. Understand the company’s mission, values, and recent achievements. This shows your genuine interest and helps tailor your responses to why you are genuinely interested in a specific organization’s fellowship program. If you’re an out of state candidate, be clear on why you are interested in moving to a new community. Most organizations want to retain fellows post fellowship, what is compelling about you that they should want to take a chance on you? 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Prepare answers for common questions like “Tell me about yourself”, “Why do you want this role?” and “what are your greatest accomplishment or failures?". 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱 (𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗧𝗮𝘀𝗸, 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁) 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀: Interviewers are picking up on your competencies based on how you are responding to each question using the STAR method. The STAR method helps you stay on track so that your responses are not too short or not too long. Keep your responses crisp! 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆: Choose professional attire that aligns with the company culture. First impressions truly matter. We have had candidates show up in the past not dressed well and if you can’t make an effort for an interview, it’s hard for the interviewers to imagine what your daily work attire would be. 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲: Maintain eye contact, offer a firm handshake, and sit up straight. Positive body language conveys confidence. In the world of virtual and hybrid work, some interviewers may be on video only. Be prepared to engage interviewers who may just be on a video screen as opposed to in person. Remember to connect with those in the room and also those on the screen. 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Prepare thoughtful questions about the role and company. This demonstrates your enthusiasm and helps you gauge if the company is the right fit for you. Don’t ask questions that you could have easily found online. 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗨𝗽: Send a thank-you email within 24 hours, expressing your appreciation for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the position. Good luck! You’ve got this! 💪 #JobInterview #CareerTips #InterviewPreparation #ProfessionalGrowth #LinkedInTips

School-based health centers (SBHCs), such as the Johns Hopkins Rales Health Center at KIPP Baltimore, are designed to provide and improve access to health care services for children and adolescents experiencing health and educational disparities. A group of Johns Hopkins Children’s Center researchers from the Rales Center for the Integration of Health and Education examined whether students enrolled in a comprehensive SBHC demonstrated more growth in standardized assessments of math and reading over four school years compared with students not enrolled in an SBHC. Findings from the study, published in Academic Pediatrics, found that elementary and middle school students enrolled in an SBHC demonstrated more growth in math and reading skills and had fewer school absences compared with those not enrolled in an SBHC. https://bit.ly/4ehN2aQ

Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP
Recently, I had the privilege to talk with Delaware Public Media's Macayla Cook about the innovation at Community Health Centers (CHCs) that go "beyond the exam room" at the children's book launch of "Captain Westside and the Health Heroes: Caring for Delaware's Families!" Please see excerpts from the article below: It tells the story of a girl named Carmen going to the doctor’s office and learning about the forms of care doctors provide, from routine check-ups to dental care to mental health maintenance. Westside Family Healthcare's CEO Chris Fraser, MBA, FACHE says improving childhood literacy through children’s books is another way Westside promotes the health of its clients. ... Westside plans to initially distribute 6,000 books through the National Reach Out and Read, which provides books to children as a part of their routine check-ups. ... Many characters in the book are based on real people associated with the clinic, including "Captain Westside" herself, who was inspired by retired Westside CEO Lolita Lopez. “I’ve had many accolades being retired, from my retirement, but this gift is just amazing,” Lopez said. “I never could have dreamed of such an opportunity for my legacy to carry on, plus to be able to teach children about good health, it’s just amazing. Today is what I call a glory day.” Lopez served as the CEO of Westside for 33 years before retiring in 2023. ... Kyu Rhee, President of the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), also voiced his support for the book and the difference it will make, especially in low-income communities. “Many of these communities we’re talking about are underserved,” Rhee said. “They have children that are on Medicaid, or are uninsured, or have low socioeconomic status. To me, the importance of this is about emphasizing literacy in communities that need it the most.” Rhee also said that he thinks the book correctly emphasizes “the importance of healthcare heroes,” along with highlighting the impact of primary care and telling a story of “hope and community.” “It’s about not only what happens in an exam room between a provider or clinician, a pediatrician and a patient and a family, but what goes beyond the exam room,” Rhee said. “It’s almost like a literacy shot. So the investment we’re making, these literary vaccinations, to promote literacy and prevent illiteracy, the impact is so important.” NACHC believes that CHCs like Westside and our primary care heroes like "Captain Westside's" Lolita Lopez are the best, most innovative, most resilient, and most diverse part of our health system. We stand united with CHCs and our primary care heroes for and with the people we have served and will serve as “the best is yet to come.” Please learn more and support the CHC movement at: https://www.nachc.org. #HealthCenters #ValueCHCs #FundCHCs #WeAreNACHC https://lnkd.in/eruZW2V9
