Report Finds Texas Medical Cannabis Program Inadequate for Patients. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) said the state’s medical cannabis program does not provide “statewide access” to medical cannabis and suggested that officials should take steps to expand accessibility for patients. The Compassionate Use Program (CUP) allows for limited access to cannabis for patients with a qualifying condition and doctor’s recommendation, but only in non-smokable forms. Last week, DPS issued a report published in partnership with medical cannabis consulting firm Weeds, Inc., investigating the sustainability and accessibility of the program. The report found the state could boost patient access by allowing for more retailers — there are currently just three dispensaries in Texas, which is the second-largest state in the U.S. in both size and population — and reducing some of the restrictions that retailers face. Additionally, the report suggests that expanding product options — as many patients have left the program due to the proliferation of delta-8 THC products derived from hemp, which is legal and largely unregulated in Texas — could improve accessibility. Texas lawmakers are want to place strict regulations over the state’s booming hemp industry — specifically targeting cannabinoids like Delta 8 and Delta 9. ⁠ ⁠ Under current Texas law, SB1240 filed in 2019, farmers in the state are authorized to grow consumable industrial hemp. Hemp is a cannabis plant that legally cannot contain more than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. Any more than that, and it’s classified as marijuana. ⁠ ⁠ However, due to an explosion of retailers taking advantage of loopholes in the law that allow them to sell intoxicating cannabinoid-based products using Delta 8 and Delta 9, Texas lawmakers are now calling for a crackdown.⁠ ⁠ This comes after a recent 2024 poll revealed that 73% of Texas adults support either full legalization or decriminalization of cannabis in Texas.⁠ https://bit.ly/3KpjpHd

Check out Dr. Maltz's Easy Peasy Anti-Inflammatory "Power" Oats for a high-protein yet filling & easy morning routine. This recipe is great for batch cooking on a weekend to eat throughout the week or portion out in to smaller containers and freeze for those with histamine issues. * 1 cup steel-cut oats * 3 cups water * 1 cup favorite unsweetened Greek or Bulgarian yogurt (today was goat's milk yogurt as it is less inflammatory than cow's milk). Plant-based milks work too, but the higher the protein, the better --> unsweetened hemp milk is the best choice there. * 2-3 Tbsp flax, chia, hemp seed blend * Sprinkle of cacao nibs for magnesium and crunch To eat now (makes 4 servings): * Boil water until very hot. Stir in oats. Bring back to boil. * Let boil for 30 minutes uncovered on low-mid heat. * Then set aside to cool. * Portion out oatmeal. * Add in yogurt or plant milk. * Add other ingredients. * Stir and enjoy. If batch cooking: * Boil water until very hot. Stir in oats. Let boil for 5 minutes. Then set aside to cool. * Portion out in to smaller freezable containers (glass and steel are best). * Add in yogurt or plant milk. * Add other ingredients. * Stir and place in fridge overnight. * Warm up in the morning (or eat cold, up to you). Consumers and hemp businesses in Texas have until April 22nd to submit comments to the state about the current rules for hemp. Here’s what you need to know: - The rules governing consumer hemp products are up for a routine review this year, which could lead to lasting changes in the state. - Texas has opened up public comments until April 22nd, 2024. - Both businesses and ordinary consumers are encouraged to comment on how the laws have worked for them and places they could be improved. - Email [email protected], with the subject line “Comments on Proposed Rule Review Chapter 300” to make your comments. Cynthia Cabrera, Chief Strategy Officer at Hometown Hero, commented on the key disconnect between the views of politicians in Texas and the farmers and companies on the ground: “I will say that it seems here in Texas, the legislators and policymakers have a disconnect between what farmers grow and what ends up in our products. So there’s this idea in Texas that the future of hemp is the hemp houses and hemp sidewalks and all that stuff. Which is great, but that’s not happening today. And what’s keeping hemp farmers in business are the finished goods like our products. And so there’s this disconnect where a lot of legislators seem to feel like they’re not connected and they are absolutely connected.” As a consumer, you are both affected by this legislation and the people whom these politicians depend on for votes, so making your voice heard is hugely valuable. If you depend on hemp products made possible by the rules as they stand today, let your legislators know how they help you and how the rules work for you (or don’t).
