UTSA has received the green light from the state to raze the landmark Institute of Texan Cultures building, which is slated to be replaced by a new arena for the Spurs. The Texas Historical Commission issued a demolition permit this week for the building known as the Texas Pavilion, one of the last remaining structures erected for the 1968 World’s Fair. The university plans to demolish the building in 2025 and complete a new downtown home for the museum in 2029 or 2030, though it has yet to choose a site. The commission’s go-ahead and the university’s timeline didn’t sit well with the Conservation Society of San Antonio, which pushed for the building to be preserved. https://bit.ly/4iLetMK

Last month, a new star appeared in the clouds. Progressive Mexican restaurant Mixtli won San Antonio's first-ever Michelin star during an awards ceremony in Houston. A school faculty member has been killed and several others, including students, were injured after a parent crashed her car into a San Antonio-area preschool playground. The crash happened Thursday afternoon as parents were leaving a holiday performance at ExcellED Montessori, a private preschool in Boerne that accepts children from 10 weeks to 6 years old. The driver, a parent, had loaded her children into her vehicle when, for an unknown reason, she suddenly accelerated, hitting another car in the school parking lot, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said. The impact sent both vehicles crashing through the fence. On the other side of the fence, the school faculty member was watching over students as they played, Salazar said. He said the car struck the faculty member, pinning her and several children under the car for “some time.” “It's a heartbreaking scene,” Salazar said. https://bit.ly/41M129y

A hand-drawn sign from Coronado Village Elementary School students reading, “We love our school board,” hung on the wall beside Judson ISD trustees as they agreed to shutter the campus to cope with declining enrollment. At a crowded board meeting on Thursday night, the Judson ISD board voted 6-1 to approve a cost-cutting plan that will result in Bexar County’s 26th school closure since 2023. Next year, Coronado Village’s dual language program will be relocated to Selma Elementary School, one of two new campuses funded by a $345M bond package approved by voters in 2022. District officials have insisted that affected employees will retain their jobs. The vote makes Judson one of five San Antonio school districts to consolidate campuses in the last two years because of fewer students and reduced funding. https://bit.ly/4foKiZ2

An iconic landmark in San Antonio has been named one of the "most beautiful places" in the country. The River Walk was included in a recent roundup of 35 domestic travel destinations by the magazine House Beautiful, which also recommended a hop-on, hop-off river cruise to visit the Arneson River Theatre. The River Walk was one of three spots in Texas that House Beautiful lists as the beautiful places "you need to visit ASAP." https://bit.ly/402Fy6Z
