During my tenure as Director of Analytics at Medvantx, we experienced a leadership transition when Prasanna Parthasarathy joined as CEO. Leadership changes often bring uncertainty, but Prasanna's arrival was transformative—he cultivated an inclusive and progressive culture that uplifted the entire organization. Although Prasanna was based in California and I was in Florida, he managed to bridge that distance seamlessly. He also approached my disability in an empowering way. From the outset, he recognized my value based on my contributions, holding me to the same high standards as everyone else. Prasanna is one of the most effective leaders I have worked with—not only for his strategic leadership but also for the respect and empowerment he showed me as a professional. Reflecting on this experience has provided me with significant insights into self-awareness and accountability. Prasanna’s commitment to inclusivity and collaboration inspired me to reconsider how advocacy, fairness, and merit interact in the workplace. Advocacy for disability rights must be grounded in fairness. It should not lead to exceptions that undermine core employment principles such as ability, contribution, and performance. Having lived with Spinal Muscular Atrophy my entire life, I understand the critical role of laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in ensuring fair opportunities. However, these laws should function as frameworks for equality, not as shields from accountability. Over my career in both the United States and the United Kingdom, I have observed concerning instances where individuals use their disability to circumvent performance standards. This behavior undermines operational efficiency and devalues the efforts of those who are genuinely dedicated to contributing. Employment must always be centered around ability, contribution, and the fulfillment of job responsibilities. Reasonable accommodations should be designed to support performance, not excuse underperformance. Genuine inclusivity requires that everyone—regardless of disability—be held to the same standards of accountability. This approach ensures that workplaces are not only inclusive but also high-performing. As we continue to advocate for more inclusive work environments, we must also promote fairness and accountability. Advocacy and accountability are not mutually exclusive; they can and should coexist, ultimately creating environments that are beneficial for everyone. 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁, 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝗱, 𝗧𝗼 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Charming, brilliant, and hilarious—Huggy Hayagreeva Rao had the Sand Technologies team glued to our seats during our most recent company-wide "Thursday Late Discussion" session. Huggy is the co-author of "Scaling Up Excellence" and a professor of Organizational Behaviour at Stanford University. So when he speaks, we're all ears. One of the key takeaways that really struck a chord with us was Huggy's perspective on scaling excellence. He described it as "multiplying curiosity with generosity." Huggy pointed out that as companies grow, they often fall into the trap of "addition bias" and "time poverty." We just can't help but pile on more and more, until we're so overwhelmed that our curiosity and generosity take a backseat. Next thing you know, we're just going through the motions, feeling depleted, and lacking that sense of accountability. But the truth is that scaling isn't just about addition. In fact, sometimes it's about smart subtraction. We need to identify and remove the obstacles that stifle our team's ability to be curious and generous. When people are in that mindset, magic happens, problems get solved, everyone brings their A-game, and we all go home feeling energized rather than drained. Also, subtraction is like mowing the lawn: it's not a one-and-done deal—you've got to keep at it regularly. It's not just about efficiency, but about giving our team the gift of time, which inspires them to reciprocate with their best efforts. We have been on a massive scaling journey over the last three years. Our operations have grown from one site to 30 sites and the number of engineers we are developing has grown by 5,000X (which if my math is correct is about 500,000%). We are just getting started, so we’re always curious about what we need to do as an organization to maintain our scale, and not lose quality, dynamism, agility, and our innovative spirit. The team is already lobbying for Huggy to host our TLD every week 😄—a testament to how insightful, thought-provoking, and relatable his lessons are. We have homework, though; time to put these ideas to work and start scaling up excellence.

Our impromptu encounter is more evidence that Boulder teems with entrepreneurs 💪 Kamal lives just a few blocks away from our BARC meetings this week. He is CTO of Decube, maker of a “data trust platform” for AI, with offices in the US and Singapore. Kamal got me thinking about the need to observe, govern, and score the trustworthiness of the multi structured data that trains and prompts AI models. As an industry we have lots of work to do.
