In my experience these are resource intensive, both from the DBA team and the database owners. In addition, there are inevitably applications where database upgrades are delayed, which can result in increased cost, due to administration and management overhead, and even new license or support agreements with database vendors when specific database versions have to be available beyond the end-of-life date.

Data products is a typical example which you can build on using this agility on modelling and data engineering. Good example would be using the customer foundation data model to interact with the teller interactions which is a key value model on a enterprise model and building it on business data product to expose the interactions.

I am not the technical expert of databases that being considered core IT capability. But being in techno-functional role in Life Science industry, on reading through details of all the types described above, I think Life Science industry needs Jack of all of the above. There is a sudden increase in volume and velocity of clinical trial data with digitisation. As it deals with human life, it is a highly regulated industry, which adds in the veracity component. With increasing sources of data, another V - variety is ever increasing with structured and unstructured data. Having said that the volumes are never going to be as huge as other industries like banking, retail, telecom. But all other Vs would factor in selecting a database for LS.

Although database technology selection is important the real issue is, who are accountable for the content and quality of data (business, IT, data professionals) in an enterprise and how the selected database technology/ies enable and support that. It is necessary to answer this key question at a detailed level for the data of each business context in sales, manufacturing, logistics, administration etc.
