In 1999, I joined Rockwell Collins (Collins Aerospace). The new CEO was Clay Jones, and he was a strong advocate for Lean. He was CEO until 2013, when the baton was passed to current CEO of Boeing, Kelly Ortberg. I was worried that the Lean program would fall apart, since it was mostly Clay's initiative. But it held up through a new CEO, which proved that Lean was embedded into the culture of the company. I recently found a speech given by Clay back in 2006, 7 years into his role as CEO. This is what we mean by #Lean #Leadership. After listening to this speech, you will understand why Lean worked really well at Rockwell Collins. Plus, not everyone learns the same way. - Instructor Led / Mix it up between in house and external trainers - Self-paced with progress checks - Job shadowing - Cross training and rotation programs - Interactive hands-on - Webinars - Lunch and learns with suppliers Be creative and keep it fun. Include games and contests. 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 Send managers and supervisors to learn how to train and teach. Utilize them as your trainers. This helps develop leadership skills as well as making the training more personal. "You do not have enough focus on your bottlenecks or core process" I often get to share this statement as I hear manufacturing leaders share about their struggle to improve the bottleneck operations. I ask "How long does a change-over take?" "About 2 hours". they say ✅ IF YOU ARE MEASURING IN HOURS INSTEAD OF MINUTES, YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH FOCUS! also MAKE IT VISUAL How about it takes us 115 minutes? Then if we miss by 20 minutes, that is a lot. If it takes us 2 hours and we only miss by 1/2 hour, that is not too bad. Urgency must be visually tracked and at divisible units. If you have 115 minute change-overs on a bottleneck operation, it is time to attack this with SMED, I have led many teams to bring change-overs down to less than 10 minutes! It is possible. I know you don't believe me and your process is special, but it is possible. You don't realize the downtime you are wasting in your operation. DM me to discuss and I can help you get started. ______________________________________________________ ✅ Lean Concepts work in the Office TOO! How about project managers? "A new product takes about 6-9 months, we try hard to improve but it usually takes a year."... this is what most product and engineering teams tell me. ✅ IF YOU ARE MEASURING IN MONTHS INSTEAD OF DAYS, YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH FOCUS! MAKE IT VISUAL How about a new product takes us 127 working days? Boom, now there is a target. Let's see the Gantt Charts, have our weekly updates; and when behind, add resources to hit our targets. This one change in how bottleneck operations and projects are measured, and visually represented, can often bring huge improvements. 👉 What units are you using to measure change-overs or projects? 👉 What do you think of this concept? Accountants. How about # of days to close a month? Ever considered measuring that in hours instead of days? 5 day target and we close in 7 days is not bad. But 37 working hour target and we close in 52 working hours is terrible. Same performance, way different perception. #SMED #leanmanufacturing #bottlenecks #minutesnothours #improvements P.S MEASURE WHAT MATTERS! PPS. Do not use common numbers 100, or 120 minutes, use 98 or 118 or 121. You will have greater focus.

According to SHRM, the key takeaways for employers from the report are that the labor market is stabilizing. What type of manufacturing leader are you; the ‘hero’ or the ‘ambassador’? The hero will often find employees resorting to them for help, get questions answered or solve problems. The ambassador delegates & ask questions like “what do YOU think we should do?” when presented with a challenge from subordinates. Heroes are typically always “on the clock”, buried in work & struggle with work-life balance. What is true value of eliminating waste in the process with Lean Manufacturing?

Lean Legends: Frederick Winslow Taylor⭐ Frederick Winslow Taylor, often heralded as the father of scientific management, was a true pioneer in the field of industrial engineering. His passion for improving efficiency in the late 1800s and early 1900s laid the foundation for many of the principles we rely on today in Lean manufacturing. Taylor's journey began when he passed the entrance exam for Harvard but chose instead to become an apprentice patternmaker and machinist at Enterprise Hydraulic Works in Philadelphia. He later climbed the ranks at Midvale Steel Works, where his keen observations of worker efficiency—or lack thereof—led him to develop groundbreaking management techniques. At Midvale, Taylor noticed workers were "soldiering," or not working to their full potential. As a foreman, he began to systematically study work outputs, a method reminiscent of today's Six Sigma practices. He understood that to improve productivity, he needed to set clear expectations for both machines and people. This focus on the "human" component of production led to the development of scientific management, characterized by four main principles: ⭐Replace rule-of-thumb work methods with scientifically studied tasks. ⭐Scientifically select, train, and develop each employee. ⭐Provide detailed instruction and supervision for each task. ⭐Divide work almost equally between managers and workers. Taylor's career took him to various roles, including general manager and consulting engineer for the Manufacturing Investment Company of Philadelphia. He later opened his own consulting practice and joined Bethlehem Steel, where he and his team developed high-speed steel, significantly advancing mass production. In 1911, Taylor presented his seminal work, The Principles of Scientific Management, which solidified his legacy in the field. Despite his passing in 1915, his influence endures, shaping modern industrial practices and Lean methodologies. As we continue to strive for excellence in Lean manufacturing, we remember Frederick Winslow Taylor, whose innovative spirit and dedication to efficiency continue to inspire us.
