Celebrating African American Heritage: A New Partnership to Promote Virginia’s Rich History

Today, we’re excited to share that we’ve teamed up with the African American Heritage Association of Virginia (AAHAVA) and Soul of Virginia Magazine to embark on a powerful new initiative: promoting and integrating African American heritage trails across the state of Virginia.

This partnership is about more than just connecting dots on a map. It’s about bringing to life the stories, culture, and contributions of African Americans throughout Virginia’s history, many of which have been overlooked for too long. These trails will take visitors on curated journeys, guiding them through significant landmarks, historical sites, and cultural treasures that are vital to understanding the African American experience in our state.

    Why this matters
African American heritage trails are far more than tourist attractions. They’re bridges to the past, and when done right, they create pathways for future generations to walk proudly in the footsteps of those who came before. These trails are educational, immersive, and they foster a deep connection to the local communities and their heritage. For Imagine, this is right up our alley—using tourism to do more than just fill hotel rooms but to drive cultural awareness, build sustainable economies, and foster a sense of community.

    The Vision
This initiative, led by Imagine’s CEO Rebecca Barnes and AAHAVA President W. Kent Ruffin, lays the groundwork for integrating heritage trails into a cohesive network that will allow visitors to explore African American history in a more dynamic and engaging way. From museums to historical markers to hidden gems, these trails will connect people to stories they may not have known were part of Virginia’s landscape. And that’s the key: connection.
