Last week’s 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 was a powerful reminder of the impact of intentional leadership. A special thank you to Leila Entezam, LMFT, MBA for her incredible insights on the neuroscience of ego. Her expertise illuminated how an unchecked ego can quietly erode team dynamics and decision-making. One key takeaway? “𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖 ‘𝙥𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚’ 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙪𝙮 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙞𝙣 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨. I’ll be joining Private Directors Association® colleagues Tina Greenbaum, CEO, Mastery Under Pressure; Randall Beard, Independent Board Director/Advisor; and Rodolfo Paiz, CEO, Fidelius on Thursday, June 13 at 5 PM ET for a panel discussion on boardroom conflict. Each board member’s perspective is incomplete. So, when making business decisions, it’s useful to tap a range of perspectives. However, differences in perspective can lead to conflict. The more different the perspectives, the harder it is to foster effective collaboration. We’ll be exploring ways for private company boards to take advantage of differences. My personal favorite is to begin deliberations by clarifying the desired outcomes. Then, instead of asking, “What should we do?” you can ask, “What are our options? and “What are the implications of each?” This reduces the risk of polarization and makes effective collaborative problem solving more likely. #collaboration, #governance, #boardofdirectors

Regardless of the election’s outcome, how leadership manages the heightened stress, distractions, and emotional reactions during this period will play a crucial role in maintaining productivity, engagement, and employee wellbeing...  ...Almost 7 in 10 Americans confess to feeling “exhausted” by the political system and more than 1 in 2 feel “angry.” As the countdown toward the presidential election intensifies, this lingering emotional fatigue is likely to increase too. Loneliness is an epidemic. It has real, life-threatening impacts. It isn't unique to any specific age group or demographic. According to the article, 1 in 5 people says they feel lonely at work, which is so sad because we spend so much time at work. As someone who now works 100% remotely, I can tell you that it can be lonely, but it isn't just about being remote and there are still ways to create connection. This is a great article from Harvard Business Review about how businesses and organizations can help combat this phenomenon (thanks for sharing Jen Lewi). Creating a culture of connection (inclusive, welcoming, and caring), respect, and fun takes intention and prioritization (especially by leadership). And I agree with Jen - professional associations can help too. Here are some things that I've seen work well at work or with my professional networking groups: 1. Prioritize casual time together when in-person meetings take place. Non-working, but voluntary team dinners, coffees, and breakfasts are valuable. Volunteering together for a good cause is another way to create community. It is best when this is modeled and led from the top and includes everyone on the team. Making time to connect makes people feel important and valued as a person, not just as an employee. 2. Mentoring is a great way to help people find belonging by creating relationships that can anchor individuals at work and in professional associations. 3. Establish a ROUTINE of connection opportunities around a shared interest or allowing individuals to share their gifts. Book club, journal club, and coffee chats that can allow topic leadership to rotate can bring people together to have conversations and allow quieter team members to shine. 4. Recognize individual personalities and needs. Introverts vs extroverts, gregarious vs conservative personalities may need different opportunities, but everyone needs connection. 5. Remember birthdays, anniversaries, and pay attention to losses and individual needs. Extend care when individuals are going through personal or family struggles such as illness, death, and transitions. Notice and respond; cards, flowers, meals, and calls or texts really do make a difference. What do you think? Have you experienced loneliness at work?
