ICYMI - Tech Policy Press shared a thought-provoking discussion on a recent paper about the ethical challenges of AI assistants. https://lnkd.in/gWUBRgu8 Justin Hendrix spoke with two of the authors, Shannon Vallor (The University of Edinburgh) and Iason Gabriel (Google DeepMind) who consider the ethical questions that arise if firms develop today’s chatbots to have new functions – making them appear more human-like. They raise important considerations about the complex trade-offs when assessing potential benefits and harms, the duty of care required to develop inclusively and sustainably, and the need for a new definition of “responsible AI” in industry. Vallor drew on the history of ethics in medicine to call for professionalization in the tech industry and Gabriel concurred, “there is a big challenge right now, which is to move from ethical foresight to ethical practice.” Whether you're in tech, public policy, or just curious about our AI future, this podcast offers valuable insights and a call to action. My favorite part of the Senate hearing on AI was when Senator Blumenthal asked about the timeline for AGI and how soon we should have standards for it and David Evan Harris response that the answer to that question might not be that important to policymakers because current AI challenges (like bias, deepfakes, and election interference) share common policy solutions with potential AGI risks. These include liability frameworks, licensing, registration, and provenance tracking. The Brookings Institution's Brookings Brief's article, "Rendering misrepresentation: Diversity failures in AI image generation" by John Villasenor, Expert and Senior Fellow on Governance Studies, Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings and Jeremy Baum is insightful but not surprising. It is worth the 8-minute read. The article highlighted the exponential growth of AI-generated images. "With the explosion of AI-generated visual content, users are creating an average of 34 million images per day." The multi-stage process that DALL-E, an AI image generator, uses to create images from a user's prompt was informative, but their findings on misrepresentation and biased results are not. As a user of AI for image creation, I have found that it takes numerous strategic prompts to get that accurate diverse visual content. Suppose you do not have inclusive teams, including women, African Americans, and other underrepresented communities working at the development stage in the tech space. In that case, these misrepresentations and inaccuracies will continue to grow with the exponential growth in the AI space. A starting point toward a sustainable SOLUTION needs to include diversifying the tech talent pipeline by removing education and training barriers and creating opportunities for access. This is an achievable goal that is not driven by rhetoric but by commitment and action. Using inclusive curators and focus groups after an AI product is in the marketplace is not the solution. Championing and using diverse tech talent at every stage of AI creation will help lower the occurrences of these "misrepresentations" and unintended biases. #techdiversity #AI #techforgood #AIForALL

This is similar to my own experiences while running the Panorama Project, where some individual publishers — and even more individuals within their organizations — were willing to explore ways to collaborate, but most hid behind trade associations that refuse to seriously engage libraries as valued partners. While CDL has often been misrepresented by publishers and some library-adjacent organizations with their own agendas, it can be a mutually beneficial option in specific instances. That'll never happen as long as publishers' default stance is that libraries are the enemy. Meanwhile, next week, dozens of publishers will be in San Diego declaring their love for libraries, which really just means all the free marketing they provide despite regularly being treated like pirates. #libraries #publishing #ebooks #cmonson

Today I have two new news items to share with you. The first -- Research Uncovers ‘Critical’ Knowledge Gaps in AI Governance: According to a just issued press release from MIT CSAIL, “as organizations rush to implement artificial intelligence (AI), a new analysis of AI-related risks finds significant gaps in our understanding, highlighting an urgent need for a more comprehensive approach.” The research has uncovered critical gaps in existing AI risk frameworks -- even the most thorough individual framework overlooks approximately 30% of the risks identified across all reviewed frameworks. The second item -- How CPAs Can Bring Order to A Disorderly World: An article in the Journal of Accountancy stresses that a tech-savvy vision will help accountants use their skills to generate data, analyze problems and instill order that begets trust. Inspiring reflection on #AI and us as #humans. #AlternativeIntelligence 📚 Humans need stories to understand ourselves, we are the only creature on this planet that tells #stories to figure out what kind of creature we are. 🤯 "Have we collectively as a species got here because we've been telling the story backwards?" 🧠 Humans are themselves patterns of information, not fixed entities, as temporary crystallizations of information flow. 💡 When we stop pressing our biases onto AI and start asking it to find patterns in the darkness where we can't see, then truly we start to discover the unknown. 🧠 "We'd have to be prepared for AI to become more than a tool. AI could become a non biological life form working alongside and inside Homo sapiens." 🌌 AI will upend the normal rules of how we live and maybe how we die, disrupting the concept of death as the final answer. 🤖 Rapid development of AI will see us living alongside non-biological entities, similar to deities in different cultures and times.
