Since the announcement of Anthropic's Claude 3.5, I've been experimenting with it, amazed by the seamlessness of generating HTML5 on demand and preview playground. Today, I tried an exciting experiment: Can I teach my 6-year-old daughter to develop a mobile app through conversations with the system while maintaining her curiosity and keeping the learning age-appropriate? To start this, I used an existing avenue, Chitchat with Zara&Dadda, where we discussed math and science, and, lately, I started introducing AI to her. Zara has learned prompting for her use and knows how to use them to get what she wants. In this short clip, Claude assisted in building an HTML5 app that teaches addition through counting. The clip doesn't show the final version, which Zara finished with her favorite prompt: "Can you make it adorable?" it did a fantastic job. It is well-understood that use cases such as E-commerce Search and Enterprise Search have distinct structures. Vendors of search products offer varied solutions tailored to each or specialize in one over the other. Additionally, use cases involving #Observability, #Monitoring, and #Security are fundamentally reliant on #SearchTechnologies and require specialized vertical solutions. Delving into #EcommerceSearch reveals significant differences based on the deployment area. The approach for a retailer, a grocery store, or a specialized sports shop will not be the same. Moreover, marketplaces introduce a host of unique challenges. Ultimately, #EnterpriseSearch might be the sole domain where a one-size-fits-all solution is feasible. However, even in this case, numerous challenges arise with integration into particular environments, such as connectors, user interfaces and experiences, and distinct features like faceting or conversational search. It seems evident that a company can either focus on a specific niche as a #productcompany, offer a suite of #professionalservices alongside its software as a solution company, or act as a #platformcompany that provides core technology and relies on partners and integrators to develop vertical solutions on top of it. I've had the privilege to know Max Kanat-Alexander for the last year through our Hangar DX community, and since then I've learned so much about DevEx him. Max is the author of Code Simplicity, was a TL at Google who defined the code review guidelines and was also the Chief architect of the Bugzilla project. I built a framework for building high-performing teams and we've been using it successfully at Ready Set for the last 3 years. I get asked a lot about it (and the story of how I created it) so I decided to share it publicly. So how did this come about? It started with reading everything I can find on operating successful businesses. After reading countless books & articles on high-functioning teams, I noticed the same core traits came up over and over again. These traits became the IDOC framework. I came up with the IDOC framework to determine what constitutes a great team, and how to identify which elements may be missing. It’s less of an invention and more of a distillation of existing knowledge into something that’s hopefully more practical, memorable, and useful. IDOC stands for Innovator, Doer, Organizer, and Connector—four key skill sets necessary for a high-performing team. → Innovators (I) are visionaries who generate new ideas and think strategically. John, my co-founder, exemplifies this as he is constantly coming up with innovative concepts and looking at the bigger picture. → Doers (D) are those who execute and get things done. These people take action and drive projects forward. → Organizers (O) focus on processes, scalability, and efficiency. I’m an organizer. As an engineer by trade, my strengths lie in creating efficient and scalable systems. → Connectors (C) excel at bringing people together and fostering team cohesion. All great teams have connectors; empathetic listeners who can motivate and develop others. Every new hire at Ready Set is assessed against these traits.  We assemble teams that combine complimentary profiles so I, D, O and C are represented. People can be strong in one or more of these areas. No one excels in all four, which is the point. It’s a quantifiable way to identify both what a team is missing and the right individual to best fill that gap. Last Tuesday, Malsgufa, our legacy CMS backend, was shut down. This milestone for BI's Tech and Product team culminated years of planning, effort, and execution. Malsgufa's first commit was on July 25, 2014, leading to 5,186 commits across nearly 30 repositories. Built and maintained by scores of engineers, its deprecation represents significant cost savings (20 production replicas, 3 instances of Solr, and an insane number of Zookeeper instances!), reduced security risk, and the elimination of an often-blamed boogeyman. The journey began in January 2020. Our challenge: moving traffic off Malsgufa without rebuilding everything in Muse. Initially, we tried GraphQL as an intermediary between Viking and our services, but progress was limited by Viking's complex Angular/Vue architecture. In January 2023, we pivoted to the strangler fig pattern with a shim. This approach proved far more effective – all Malsgufa traffic went through the shim first, with verbose logging to track unhandled requests. Meanwhile, we built Story Versioning API (SVAPI), incorporating lessons learned from Malsgufa's limitations around history and publishing states. We ran four major migrations (stories, custom pages, slideshows, and videos), building support in Muse and shimmed compatibility for Viking. Traffic gradually decreased from a torrent to a trickle, leading to the gloriously uneventful shutdown. Next, we will deprecate Viking by Q2 2025, unifying our users in the Muse ecosystem to create the industry's most innovative CMS.
