After the recent revelations by Canada—which accused New Delhi of being involved in the assassination of a Canadian Sikh separatist leader—and the US indictment of a former Indian intelligence officer in a murder-for-hire plot, the Modi government has come under increasing pressure from the West. To confront a more powerful adversary like China, India needs the help of these countries, which are also prone to lecturing Modi about the backsliding of democracy, treatment of religious minorities, draconian laws, the situation in Kashmir and Manipur, and ties with Russia. A détente with Beijing provides New Delhi some breathing space to assert its independence and deal with the United States from a position of greater strength. It does not mean that India will forego its strategic partnership with the United States but only that it will be able to handle the pressure from Washington better.
