“I was lucky enough to work with Rachel as a freelance writer and as a direct report when she brought me onto her team full time. Rachel can pull off a kick-ass campaign or produce valuable content in her sleep - at least, that's how she makes it look. She understands problems, finds solutions, and executes to perfection. But what stands out to me the most about Rachel is her leadership qualities. Rachel consistently encouraged her team to bring their unique talents to the table and make an impact. That, coupled with her hands-on guidance, created an environment where people felt safe to think big, take risks, and do their best work. I am grateful for my time working under Rachel's mentorship.”

You're facing pushback from stakeholders on digital tools. How can you overcome their resistance?
The more the people using a new tool feel empowered, the more likely you are to succeed. Enable people to offer feedback in a variety of ways, including within the tool in real time if possible. Allow people to communicate in whatever way is most comfortable for them. For some people, that will be an email, whereas others might prefer to speak in person. Actively make yourself or others available and eager to receive feedback and you are more likely to get it. Finally, wherever you can, implement feedback in ways that are clearly visible. Nothing makes people feel valued like seeing their feedback taken seriously.

You're facing pushback from stakeholders on digital tools. How can you overcome their resistance?
This is closely connected to understanding resistance--but is a separate point. Once you have conversations to figure out what concerns people have, you can focus your education around those concerns. You can name them out loud, and address them specifically. Be sure to leave lots of time and space for questions, and encourage people to ask. When it comes to digital tools, don't be afraid to demonstrate their value and how they work. Sometimes, seeing a tool in action can help people understand what it could do for them.

You're facing pushback from stakeholders on digital tools. How can you overcome their resistance?
When you're listening to concerns, make sure to focus on listening--not talking. Challenge yourself to ask questions that get to the heart of the concern. Spending time understanding what fears people have will help you determine if those can be overcome, and if so, how. The best changes have broad support and the only way to get to broad support is through a deep dive into other perspectives than your own.

This was a piece I wrote on my personal blog after being sent to experience JDC's work in the former Soviet Union. It was picked up by a JDC executive and sent out to hundreds of staff, board members and supporters.
