Your PR campaign is behind schedule. How will you salvage your client's reputation?
The schedule doesn't matter to anyone outside your work team, unless there is something critical tied to the timeline, such as a store opening. It's more important to do the job correctly than to stick to an overambitious schedule.

How can you control media coverage of your organization?
Anyone who believes you can fully control media about your client is selling that client a load of x+&$. We can't control the media, but we can do several things. First, we can be accessible. Never say "no comment." It allows others to shape the narrative. Also, never be defensive. Know what you want to communicate and train your client to do it in a way that is engaging and believable. This really all comes down to responsible media relations -- building relationships and treating the media with respect.

What is the most effective way to manage a difficult client in PR?
It all starts with transparency: transparency when you begin working with the client about what PR can and can't do. And transparency from the client about their business objectives and PR goals. I often find PR practitioners get in trouble when they don't know how to educate their client or say no to them.

What are the most common PR challenges that require strategic thinking?
Helping a client move from a me mindset to understanding how to create a narrative and messaging that matters to others. You have to help clients see themselves in the context of their industry, locale and current events, so they can be viewed for what they bring to the table. It's critical to work with clients to understand what is important to others and build their messaging around that.
