Industry Insider – California hosted a fantastic event with CDPH and their IT leadership. If you are not a member, you should join. Not only do you get access to a broad cross section of the tech community, but you also get to hear directly from agencies. Here are four take aways I shared with our team. IT decision making involves policy and program people not simply IT leadership. They participate and inform the process, but they are not the sole decision-makers. They have a very pro-Microsoft disposition. Their history of AD Hoc, program driven technology spend means their technology stack is very complicated. They view building on a Microsoft platform as a major driver of efficiency and cost savings. Their technology budgeting process is changing which offers opportunities to capture larger sales across program areas in the future. CDPH has massive privacy and security concerns they need help addressing.

"#AI Companies Fight to Stop California Safety Rules" | Industry says a bill moving through the state legislature would chill innovation for the young technology - Well written by Preetika Rana (unfortunately behind a pay wall) This appears like #Californiagovernment getting involved in something it doesn't fully understand, including the value to the citizens, and it didn't consult (arguable) with tech to better understand it. The bill applies to anyone doing business in California. Will we see another large group of companies moving out or refusing to do business in California? “There are people in the tech sector who are opposed to any and all forms of regulation no matter what it is, even for something reasonable and light-touch..." - Scott Wiener, #Democratic state senator from San Francisco who drafted the bill. He said he is engaging with the tech industry and is open to changes. “If it were to go into effect as written, it would have a chilling effect on innovation in California,” said Luther Lowe, the head of public policy at startup accelerator Y Combinator, which has played a leading role in lobbying efforts against the bill. “There are clauses in there that, honestly as an #AI developer, I have no idea what to do,” - Andrew Ng, Stanford University computer-science professor, who co-founded Google’s deep-learning research team. I am sure everyone will have their opinion. Do you think California government should enforce this bill? Do you think they should have consulted with tech first to understand the early day costs and/or benefits such as to the human condition, before designing such a Bill?
